Bruce Lee...Founder of MMA?
67
Believe it or not the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) of today was actually created from the concept of a well known fighter from the past....maybe you've heard of him...Bruce Lee. That's right it was the renowned Lee that coined the phrase, "The best style is no style, the best form is no form," he later stated that you must take what works from different martial arts and discard the rest. This is exactly what MMA is based on; two competitors attempt to defeat each other by potentially utilizing a wide variety of fighting techniques, including manipulating areas of striking and grappling.
Lee devoted his life to studying martial arts, and even went to the extent of creating his own style which incorporated various styles into one...Jeet kune do...which literally means, "Way of the Intercepting Fist," was his combat philosophy of 1967.
Today fighters are attempting to follow these steps, taking the best of what they have studied and bringing it into the ring. The best MMA fighters are the ones who continually cross-train in several realms of striking and grappling, otherwise you'll end up getting beat either on the ground or on your toes.

I´ve studied martial arts since I was 5 years old and bruce lee has always been one of my favorites, he is the ultimate martial artist, god bless his soul and may he rest in peace. Great page this one.
While Bruce Lee did mix styles, I think that he is among many founders of MMA. In his time there was no 'proving ground' so to speak as we have today with organized MMA. With the advent of the UFC and Pride the world was able to see true hybrid fighters such as Frank Shamrock. Bruce was a true specimen and a revolutionary in bringing fighting arts into the spotlight. He is one of many fathers of MMA.
Bruce Lee was on of the strongest proponents of using what was necessary to defend oneself.
The general who understands the advantages of varying tactics understands how to handle his troops. The general who does not understand these will not be able to turn his knowledge into success. If in the midst of difficulties, one is ready to seize an advantage, misfortune can be avoided. (Sun Tzu)
Bruce found faults in every style of fighting. He was considered a non-traditionalist and was somewhat of an outcast in martial arts circles. Then, no one mixed different styles. People kept true to one style. While Bruce took the strengths in each style of fighting, and molded a different way of fighting-Jeet Kune Do. Which is the first Mixed Martial Arts. No one else did this in the seventies. He was %100 percent commited to this craft. There is not a fighter today that was as commited as Bruce was. It was his full time job. He mapped out his days around training and fighting. It wasn't to train for an upcoming match. It was his life!
I highly recommend the Tao of Jeet Kune Do!
Bruce Lee is the Father of Mixed Martial Arts!
Hey Curmudgeon, I recently created a group on a social network:Facebook called Bruce Lee:Pioneer of Mixed Martial Arts. Your knowledge aided me in the research of Bruce and his philosophy of Jeet Kune Do and in fact I took a small portion of your knowledge and added it on my group, if you don't mind. I highly recommend you check out the group I created if you like to see what I have collected on Bruce and his relevant teaching in comparison to MMA. Thanks again for your wisdom.
i find interesting that people never look through martial art history.
bruce was not the first martial artist i mix style, most traditional martial arts were all mixed. there is not one okinawa karate style that didnt come from a combination of others. the same for judo.
bruce was a good martial arts some people consider him great. but the only thing he is the founder of is his philosophy of jkd.

combining styles has been going on fro centrys if not longer
While Bruce Lee did mix styles, he was not the founder. Infact, he got the idea from Wally Jay (founder of Small Circle Jujutsu) who introduced and taught Bruce Lee Jujutsu when he was aged 22, Particularly DanZan Ryu Jujutsu (founded by Henry Seishiro Okazaki) Wally got the idea from Okazaki who blended Several styles of Jujutsu, Boxing, Wrestling, Karate, Kung fu, Filipino arts, ETC. to create his system way back in 1929 before Bruce was even an itch in his daddy's pants. Evidence of this can be found by reading any Dan Inosanto (Bruce's protege) article where he discusses Bruce's martial arts training. Also, in a Black Belt Magazine interview (collectors edition) Bruce called Wally Jay the deadliest man he knew. Mixing Styles goes back years and years. every martial art is a mixture of other martial arts. no art is pure. not now, not ever.
