68History of the Cellular Phone
The Mobile Phone has now been around since about 1970, not a very long time in the scheme of things. The Cell phone ,cellular phone or Mobile Phone as it is called in many places including Australia has become a tool that is almost indispensable.
Almost as common as bums, everyone seems to have one. We have in virtually every country all over the world, huge companies spending millions of Dollars in advertising just to get you to buy a new Mobile or Cell Phone.
Huge companies like Apple with their iPhone, Motorola with their Razr range, Nokia with their you beaut Nokia N97 phone range, just to name a few of the manufacturers. There will have to be another genre invented , these devises have gone way passed being just telephones.
Then you have the myriad of carrier companies with their almost limitless amount of plans. Including companies like AT&T, Verizon, Smart Phone in America . Telstra , Optus and Three Mobile Phones in Australia. Then there is Motorola and Vodaphone which I believe are worldwide.
Ok now here is the kicker.
I'm not here to sell you a cell phone or even a mobile phone. I'm here to tell you (if you are not aware of it already) that there may be an inherent danger with all mobile phones.
But first a bit of history about myself. I must declare that I am not a qualified medical person. I am now retired but throughout my working life I dealt with telecommunications and high frequency transmitting equipment and I have seen the results of what high frequency burns can do to a human body.
Mobile Phones Cell Phones Ticking Time Bomb
I was going to write this Hub about how great an invention is the Cellular Phone and I am still convinced that it is one of the greatest inventions and its use will undoubtedly be extended as time progresses. However during my research I uncovered some disturbing pieces of information that have not been widely circulated and it would be remiss of me not to bring this out into the public arena. I believe that the information is quite possibly being keep under wraps by vested interests.
This danger is from Radio Wave Radiation.
Cell phones, use a low level form of microwave radiation to send and receive their signals. Microwaves, as you know, are used to cook food. As the radiation penetrates tissue it causes it to heat. The measurement of Radiation emitted by a mobile phone is called Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and is a measurement of the rate at which radio frequency (RF) energy is absorbed by the body when exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic field. It is defined as the power absorbed per mass of tissue and has units of watts per kilogram .
You can get an idea how the signal is transmitted and received by looking at the diagram.
The signal is sent from the base station as MicroWaves picked up by the Antenna on the telephone, converted to Audio and you listen.
Various governments have defined safety limits for exposure to RF energy produced by mobile devices that mainly exposes the head or a limb for the RF energy.
In the United States: the FCC requires that phones sold have a SAR level at or below 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) taken over a volume of 1 gram of tissue. So please check the SAR specification of your mobile device.?
I find it difficult to find a specific SAR for any model phone . Rather they state something to the effect: 'The highest SAR value for this model phone tested by "testing co.name" for use at the ear is X.XXX W/kg. My own phone has a rating of 0.150W/kg.
Some scientists believe
There has been a long held belief among some scientists that mobile phone usage can cause brain tumors, due to Radio wave Radiation.
According to the research that I have seen the main worry is the effect that this will have on teens and children.
I personally have noticed how prolific these devices have become among the children and teens of today. Where ever I go I see kids with these phones seemingly glued to their ears.
PROFESSOR DEVRA DAVIS, UNI OF PITTSBURGH CANCER INSTITUTE: has been quoted as saying:
“ When it comes to proof of human harm, we've kind of been led down a garden path that says the only proof that really counts is enough sick or dead people. And I think that approach has got to change and particularly with respect to something like brain cancer. Brain cancer can take 10, 20 or 30 years to develop. It may affect people 30, 40 years after they've been exposed. Our children are using cell phones in growing numbers. They're marketing cell phones now to five-year-olds.”
Dr. Lennart Hardell, from Örebro University in Sweden : (in 2007) reviewed published epidemiological papers and found that:
* Cell phone users had an increased risk of malignant gliomas.
* Link between cell phone use and a higher rate of acoustic neuromas.
* Tumors are more likely to occur on the side of the head that the cell handset is used.
* One hour of cell phone use per day significantly increases tumor risk after ten years or more.
Dr. Vini Khurana, an Australian neurosurgeon: who self published a non peer reviewed meta-study presented an "increasing body of evidence ... for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumors" and that it "is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking".
This was criticized as ‘…an unbalanced analysis of the literature, which is also selective in support of the author’s claims.’
Food and Drug Administration
For something that is according to all experts perfectly safe I find this a rather odd article I found on the FDA website regarding Cell phones and it appears in full:
FDA U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Cell Phones
Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation-emitting consumer products such as cell phones and similar wireless devices before they can be sold, as it does with new drugs or medical devices.
However, FDA does have the authority to take action if cell phones are shown to emit radio frequency energy (RF) at a level that is hazardous to the user. In such a case, FDA could require cell phone manufacturers to notify users of the health hazard and to repair, replace or recall the phones so that the hazard no longer exists.
Children and Cell PhonesThe scientific evidence does not show a danger to any users of cell phones from RF exposure, including children and teenagers.
The steps adults can take to reduce RF exposure apply to children and teenagers as well.
* Reduce the amount of time spent on the cell phone
* Use speaker mode or a headset to place more distance between the head and the cell phone. Some groups sponsored by other national governments have advised that children be discouraged from using cell phones at all.
For example, The Stewart Report from the United Kingdom made such a recommendation in December 2000. In this report a group of independent experts noted that no evidence exists that using a cell phone causes brain tumors or other ill effects. Their recommendation to limit cell phone use by children was strictly precautionary; it was not based on scientific evidence that any health hazard exists.
FDA Updated October 14, 2008
http://www.fda.gov/cellphones/
Summary
To me it seems rather odd that the FDA on one hand states the evidence does not show any danger, but on the other hand gives you the steps to take to reduce exposure. They are also only working from information from other sources, not their own research.
Now I don't want you to get me wrong I am not saying to panic about cellphones , what I am trying to get across is that we just do not know and we should be erring on the side of caution and follow the recommendations of the FDA.
I'm sure that the companies like Nokia, Motorala , Ericson et el will not like what I'm saying but lets ask them if they walk around with their phone stuck in their ears.
To be continued......
This is something that will not go away and I will be updating this site as and when new information surfaces. If anyone has anything further to add please feel free to comment below or send an email through Hubpages using the link in my profile block.
Do you feel that there is reason to be concerned ?

G'day JamaGenee, I am not too sure on that one but I would image if you were standing very close to a tower there would be some cumulative effect. One good thing though the distance of the antenna from the brain is important as the effect decreases dramatically the further it is from the brain. So I believe the best thing is to wear a earbud directly connected to the phone. But do not keep the phone antenna close to any vital organs of your body , especially your eyes.
I would have thought that everyone would be aware of the dangers involved in cell phone usage. Personally, I don't have one nor do I ever intend to get one. I certainly don't want to be at everyone's beck and call 24/7 - and I can't think of a more invasive invention in recent times.
My daughters have them though but before I let them get one I made sure they were well aware of the dangers - and I make sure we happen to be accidentally on purpose watching any TV news stories on the subject. Good hub.

Food for thought indeed. I reluctantly gave in and bought one a couple of years back and I must say I feel safer driving at nght with one. I shall get my young son to read your hub!
They are certainly a useful tool, but I believe their constant use as a business and entertainment tool has us spending too much time with them - as you say - glued to our ears. I have heard of the possible dangers and I for one believe there is cause for caution. Your hub helps bring home the point. Thanks for a great article, Ag!
Nemingha, Unfortunately not everyone chooses to heed the warnings that are being given. There is so much misinformation that reminds me so much of the tobacco companies war on wistleblowers that it scares me. You sound like a very switched on Parent, but there are parents who either don't know or don't care that they are letting their children take risks in using mobile phones, and It is the children that are in the riskier bracket.
I think the device is only as invasive as you allow it to be.
It's strange how we parents just have some many accidentally on purpose ads on TV. lol
I appreciate your thoughtful comment.
Gypsy Willow,
great to see you here and leaving such a nice comment .
My own use for them is for the same thing as youself. In Australia it is almost impossible to find a Public Telephone and the cell phone is a very handy emergency back-up.
In fact I have used it twice in the last 12 months when my vehicle would not start.
I limit my use and I also limit the number of people I give the number to as well. If most people ask I just tell them that I've forgotten the number. lol
It is the young people who I am trying to connect with here, they are either ignorant of the risk or they think they are immortal. ( I was when I was a teenager, weren't you lol ? )
Gypsy Willow thanks again for dropping by!
Christoph, nice to see you here, You have hit the old proverbial nail right on the head. They are a tool, and like most tools should be used only as and when required. I am sure most people I see using them are not using them in that way. I can see that business people have built their businesses around these devices eg real estate agents, plumbers, etc. etc. . Have you tried to get a plumber lately ?
Users should be made more aware that there are attachments that are available to make the phone safer to use !
Chris thanks for participating in the debate.
Mine has a loudspeaker option when you receive a call, I think I will use it that way from now on.
earnestshub thanks for your comment and I would say that sounds like a good idea. Can you let me know what model phone you have so I can check it out . Thanks Mate.
I work in a library and always have to remind people not to talk on their phones there because it is against the rules. One guy went ballistic once, but oh well I have to tell the patrons. The boy in the picture reminds me of work. Great hub and very informative too.
SweetiePie, thanks for a nice comment. We seem to be more relaxed in our libraries over here in Australia. Our local library is a hive of activity, anything from a childs reading group, to TV video games happening.
I don't think someone talking on the phone would even be noticed.
Next week my art society is putting on a Arts Exhibition at the Library.
agvulpes,
We have an old fashioned library with stone walls and wooden floors, and this building echos quite a bit. It is not exactly quiet because people and children do talk, but we are asked to tell patrons not to use the phones. The one reason is with all the echoing people on their phones start shouting over all the other noise, and it creates a bigger disturbance. If someone is on their phone for a few seconds I try not to say anything, but if they start having a really long conversation I just remind them.
We also have reading groups for the kids and kid's craft days, which are very fun.
We have rooms where groups meet though, so they are able to get together and have book discussions, art shows, and the like.
Very good hub.Thank You !
SweetiePie, I understand about the echoing and totally agree with your policies. Some people are just not considerate, but are just as likely be the one's to complain if they are disturbed.
Your library sounds very much like the library that I frequent.
I want that phone in the picture lol.
thks for the information. now i am in a position to change my living place bcz i am living very close to a base station. anyhow your hub gives me a timely caution. thumbs up for your great work.
sukkran thanks for dropping by. I believe that it is not wise too be living to close to a base station. If you live close to a base station and use a mobile phone, I can see no reason why the effects would not be cumulative.
I must also add that I have no medical qualifications to substantiate that statement.
Hi agvulpes its mb sorri I don't hate Ausssie was getting at my brother, he has made it his Home, Mate you are welcome. Have been reading some of your Hubs...... All good keep up the good work... I am no Hypocrite if I say something I never take it back.
But I always liked you so just thought I'd share.
bag girl, thanks for letting me know. I wondered what happened to you, it looked like you got cut off at the socks. ;-)
Its ok we're cool. If you feel like it send me an email. OK
I put bag girl before should watch the keys, will send an e mail, on Facebook in next few days fdound you there. I can't post from this site Talk about cut off at the socks, I have been well chopped at the toenails. Silly thing I was bad at the end, but most odf the drama happened whilst sleeping, Oh well, my fault I guess.
Have a great day in Melbourne.
BG is there no way that you can create another identity ?
Look for you on FB.
BG even a bad day in Melbourne still makes it a better place to be than anywhere else. LOL
I wish I had a mobile phone but that cheapskate Captain buys me nothing, you write well, plus you are cute ; )
So the headsets help, then? I just bought one of those "Jawbone" things that's supposed to cut out all background noise except your voice--however that's supposed to work. But the stupid thing won't stay in my ear! I think that's an important step in actually using it. Hmm...got any rubber cement, ag?
CabinGirl that cheapskate Captain could well be saving your life by not buying you a phone. I appreciate your compliments on my writing and I am totally going red in the face from embarrassment that someone like yourself could think that I was 'cute' ;-)
Laughing Mom , from my research it would seem that the major damage is in the high frequency range (micro waves) . I am not familiar with the "Jawbone" thing that you purchased. If you want to leave a model no or email me I will do some research and see what I can find out . ;-)
The major worry seems to be the youngens when they get the phone stuck up to their ears, hours at a time. At the moment 'texting' seem a lesser of the two evils, and possibly cheaper ?
Now about that rubber cement.? Do you really 'not' want to hear the kids screaming and the hubby nagging. Hmm on second thoughts its not a bad idea !~ lol
Nice Article.
Interesting thank God I have an earpiece I wonder how many will end up with brain cancer in the next 20 years?:)
It is really very interesting hub .I did not know until this time , that brain cancer can take 10, 20 or 30 years to develop.Thank you for these useful informations. Greetings from Greece (HELLAS)

Thanks ag, for showing the dangerous side of cell phone use. Always thought constant use *might* turn brains to mush. The information you present here pretty much confirms that they will.
Wonder what "second-hand exposure" does? i.e. not using a cell or even having one on your person, but being in a large store where several dozen customers are using theirs, and your in their radiowaves "crossfire". ????
