Punk Rock Hair Lives!

When punk rock was born in London in the 1970s, it also spawned two hairdos that have survived and thrived to the present day. The "mohawk" was a style that could be found going back to Native American styles and a very short, military version had existed since the 1960s but punk rockers took this style to new heights, literally!

Here you will learn how to make a vertical Mohawk and the related Liberty Spikes!

Picking Your Product

A variety of products have been used over the years to spike up mohawk hairdos. Not all of them are easy on the hair or quick to wash out, so pick and choose carefully.

  • White glue - hardcore street punks really did use Elmer's glue to put up their hair as it was cheap and dried clear. Although water-soluble, this is one of the nastiest methods to use and often hair has to be cut off to really get rid of it.

  • Egg whites - Another method that's very cheap and works for just about everyone except vegans. You separate the egg yolks and whites, then whisk the whites until they are very still, almost like you were making meringue. Then comb the whites into your hair and let dry.

  • Hair mousse - The lightest of commercial hair lifting products, this works well for shorter mohawks.

  • Hair gel - This thicker hair product is one of the more popular ways to spike up hair. The gel is worked into the hairs and then shaped with the hands.

  • Hair spray - This can be used alone, or in combination with any of the other methods. Some people swear the cheapest and most sticky brands work best for spiking hair, especially if it's longer.

Tricks and Tips for Spiking Your Hair

Getting Started: It doesn't really matter if you start with clean or dirty hair as so much product is going to wind up on your hair, but the hair should be well-brushed so that there are no snarls, tangles or knots.

Building Volume: Back-combing, aka "teasing" or "ratting" the hair, can help give more lift especially if your hair is very thick or longer. Sections of hair are lifted and then combed lightly near the roots in the direction of the scalp. Although this can give more support, it's also hard on the hair and can lead to breaking if done frequently.

Shaping A Mohawk Fin: Getting a really straight fin will take some practice and often works much better if you get a friend to help you. Shape the hair with the hands from the roots to the ends. Having a hair dryer can help dry the repeated applications of hair product. If you have very long hair (below shoulders or longer), it's sometimes best to lie on your side and let the hair lay on a flat surface until it dries.

Making Stronger Spikes: When making a spiked mohawk or liberty spikes, the spike shape will hold better if the ends of the spikes are twisted a bit to make the ends stick together.

Awesome... I love Mohawks and have had my share of spiked hairdo's over the years. Reminds me of high school when my girlfriend would do my hair every morning starting with the mouse and then enough Aqua Net to put the ozone layer into a hacking fit. ahh the good ol days.

My high school boyfriend was allowed one can of hair spary per week for his hair by his mom, and if it took more, it meant his hair was getting to long and he'd get it trimmed shorter.

I saw a guy in NYC with a suit, running shoes and an orange mohawk do that was 12 inches long. Also had rayban sunglasses. Cool character.

I have always wanted to try a mohawk. Maybe when I am old I will have a silver one and start wearing jewlery.

I recently found a picture of myself from 1993 when I was shaving the sides of my head, and then when I saw the hub request on the topic, I thought "Hey, this one's for me!"

Great HUB relache. I recently was up in Toronto and for some reason or other all the mohawk-ers must have been having a secret meeting on Yonge street. I have never seen so many all in one place, especially as I thought that they were out of fashion. Blue, red, blonde, brown, black, green, spicked, you name it they were all there. Quite the sight to behold.

fun HUB regards Zsuzsy

I'm not a big fan of the tall mohawks and mohawk-type haircuts. There was a kid in my highschool who wore a black trench coat and did his hair in a mohawk; and he was always kinda freaky... I'm not the most preppy person, but he always freaked me out. He was cool though; it was just his appearance. I dunno... I used a ton of gel one time and gave my yorkie a mohawk; he was pissed by the time I was done. He got a bath shortly after.

I wished I had seen this hub last year! My 8 year old son has shoulder length 'surfer' hair and wanted to spike it for wacky hair day at school. We used egg whites but didn't know to whip them first. It was hard to get to stand up and dry. Then as he played throughout the day, the egg whites started to flake and he looked like he had the worst case of dandruff ever seen on an 8 year old!
