Mold on Concrete Walls

I am unable to remove mold from my home OR they are so sticky and tough – common complaints people make about molds and mildews. Once molds have nested in your home, it is quite difficult to remove them completely and block future mold growth.

While interacting with people and investigating their problems, I have found that home owners often help molds and mildews to grow and develop inside their home!

Some people do not know how molds grow and the factors that help molds to develop and reproduce. On the other hand, there is another group that knows how molds grow and what kills mold, but they somehow miss the right mold removal techniques and suffer for long.

Here is a list of mistakes most home owners commit while cleaning mold. As a result they nurse molds in their home and elongate their suffering.

1. Failure to keep the place dry

Humidity is the key factor behind mold growth. Molds thrive because of moisture in the environment. If the moisture content is low, molds won’t grow in your home.

However, people often fail to control moisture; as a result humidity rises high and your home becomes the incubator of molds and mildews.

Places with a source of water are highly susceptible to mold growth. Relative humidity generally remains high in kitchen and bathroom. You need to use dehumidifier and exhaust fan to keep the places dry.

Another risky place is your basement. Keep a close eye on your basement through out the year. Use dehumidifier to keep the relative humidity level below 50%.

Never neglect the leaks – repair leaky roofs, plumbing defects and cracks on the walls and ceiling as early as possible. And most importantly, make sure the carpet does not remain wet for long.

2. Ignoring initial symptoms

Home dwellers often ignore the early symptoms due to lack of knowledge. You should know the symptoms of mold growth so that you can catch them early.

Musty odor is the most confirming signal of mold growth. If you observe a musty odor for couple of days, start inspecting the places that are susceptible to mold growth.

If there are small spots on the walls, especially beside the kitchen sink, bathtub and in the bathroom, consider running mold inspection and testing.

3. Wrong cleaning product

Molds are fungi. If you use sanitizer, bleach, pesticide or insecticide for mold removal, chances are high that you won’t be successful. Bleach might help you remove molds and mildews from non-porous surfaces; when molds grow on porous material like carpet or wood, bleach cannot remove mold.

Mold cleaning products made of organic products are the best things to use. Being organic they do not exert any bad effect on your health. Along with killing mold efficiently, they block all the chances of future mold growth.

Mold Removal Process

4. Part cleaning

This is a major problem and most people do this blunder. When you found mold in carpet, you applied kill mold spray to remove mold. And after few days, you found molds in kitchen. When you were busy with mold removal in kitchen, they flied to other places. And you got fade up on how to get rid of them.

The problem is, you did not organize a compact cleaning campaign. Once you notice presence of mold in your home, run a thorough mold inspection process to find out hidden mold growths. Then start to clean molds and mildews.

5. Failure to encapsulate mold infected site while cleaning mold

When you clean mold, a lot of mold spores and hyphal fragments of molds and mildews get released into air. These allergens not only make others sick, but spread mold growth to other places.

Make sure you have isolated the site of mold cleaning or the item under cleaning process perfectly.
