which was more revolutionary? The Computer or the cell phone?
63When I read the question, cell phones came to my mind at first. But after a second thought, I decided to vote for computers. I will tell you whgy I decided so. The earlier mobile phone gadgets that were released in the market had keypads and SMS (Small message service) was invented after a short while, followed by a series of additions like bluetooth, wap services, camera, video cam and many other services in the short run. But in the case of computers, the earliest computing device known now is Abacus, a device invented by the Greeks for manual calculations. It was only the quest for a method for ease of calculations that lead to invention of digital computers.
Let me brief on the five generations of computers first
The first digital computer was Zuse Z3 ( a German innovation released in 1941). ABC ( Atanasoff-Berry Computer) was released a year later. Both these computers used binary computing. While Zuse Z3 was electo-mechanical, supporting program control with the aid of punch cards(invented by J M Jacquard), ABC was non-programmable and electonic.Even though there were other inventions like Colossus, Harvard Mark and the like, it was only ENIAC(1946) that made a mark in history. It used decimal computing and program control was done by cable and switches( first generation computers).
The second generation(1959-1965) computers used tansistors, which made the computers look more compact. Furthermore, it reduced the voltage demand and gave more efficiency to the systems. The credit to such a revolutionary change goes to Bell Telephones Laboratories which invented transistors. The major second generation computers were IBM-1400 series and the 7000 series, Control Data 3600, GE-635, Honey Well -200, UNIVAC-1108
Invention of ICs by J Kilby and Noyce in 1959 led to the third generation PCs(1965-1971). Meanwhile, the concept of software and subsequent inventions of computer languages like RPG, PASCAL, etc accelerated the growth of the field like never before. It was during the third generation that user friendly harware peripherals like keyboards and monitors were introduced. Puch cards were in fact, given a good riddance during this period.
Fourth generation computers (1971-) were introduced as a result of the prominent growth in the number of components in an IC which led to development of VLSIs. VLSI replaced thousands of transistors that could have been used in a second generation computer to mould out a similar device. Power requirements were cut down very much and concepts of Desktop PC's were introduced in this era.
Fifth generation computers are those which use artificial intelligence. Azimo, POMI, Robo, etc are a result of artificial intelligence. In a way, we can say that we live in the era of artificial intelligence.
Mobile phones Vs Computers
Mobile phones also have undergone revolutionary changes in their appearance. But today's smart phones and similar gadgets could never survive without changes in the field of computers. Be it a Google Android or Windows Mobile 6.1 phone or an IPhone, without the operating system, the smart phone will prove to be nothing more than just a rubbish. This Os that runs on mobile phones is just a miniscule of the progress that happens in the fiels of computers and Information technology.
WAP ( wireless Access Protocol) was built to aid access to the web through the mobile. Java based games were another of the contributions made by computers in the mobile revolution. There are many other examples, but integrating information about all of them could not only be a hectic job but also make my readers get exhaused with reading.

You're right kello... Cell phones have landline substitutes. But there is nothing that can replace a computer( be it a laptop, a desktop or a netbook). It is said that data created around the world by 2012 will be as large as the data contained in books kept in a bookshelf which has length equal to thrice the distance between earth and the sun! What else can replace computers then?
Without the creation and development of computers, we would not have television or cell phones. Computers are essential for us to have and utilize technology. I do not think, but humans & God are more superior to computers.
Yes. I admit that you said the truth.

Absolutely the computer. For me the computer function like the human brain, Functional and intelligent. We can be compared in many ways to the computer. The computer is programmed to understand a situation, like wise we adapts to our environment.
The computer can take us where we wanted to go. It widen our knowledge and vocabulary. It is a useful tools. So much of us sitting at our desk while our computer took us millions miles away. Many gagets are found within the computer, libraries, phones, letter boxes, cameras just to name a few. I can absolutely do without a phone forever but not a computer.
