movies in my mind: my top 20 favorite movies of all time

The first movie I saw that I am sure I fully understood without needing to elbow anybody for a question was Superman I. I was in awe the whole time it played and I remember looking for the harness with which Christopher Reeve was made to fly. Although the movie ended too soon for me, I did not realize then that my love affair with the movies had just begun.

Below are some of my all time favorite movies. Yes, I would have had included more, a lot more, but the request made to me by countrywomen only called for twenty but which I came to realize eventually, although it did make the task harder, made sense - or I wouldn't finish and you will have nothing to compare your notes with.

the last emperor (1987)

john lone, peter o'toole

bernardo bertolucci (dir)

An engrossing look at a period of incessant political turmoils that besieged Imperial China and its last emperor Pu-Yi. Majestic filmmaking by Bertolucci at his imperious best.

the lord of the rings trilogy (2001-2003)

elijah wood, viggo mortensen

peter jackson (dir)

All the installments in this trilogy are powerful as they are magical. Combining elements of great storytelling, top-caliber acting and jaw-dropping special effects in continuous execution is a great cinematic achievement - specially when you spend time watching the features of the extended DVD versions.

amadeus (1984)

f. murray abraham, tom hulce

milos forman (dir)

The movie's tagline says it all: "The man. The music. The magic. The madness. The murder. The mystery." And add to that the riverting performance of F Murray Abraham and of course, the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

the english patient (1996)

ralph fiennes, juliette binoche

anthony minghella (dir)

If I were to describe this movie in one word, it has to be sweeping. The late Anthony Minghella breathtakingly presented a seamless narrative of a movie that turns like pages in a book. Love, won and lost, in a time of war.

a fish called wanda (1988)

john cleese, kevin kline

charles chrichton (dir)

Put together a quirky plot and an even quirkier group of bumbling diamond thieves and you'd come up with this comedy that I personally believe is one of the best in the genre. Everybody in the cast is a riot, particularly Kevin Kline's

armpit-sniffing Otto. Trivia: John Clease's character Archie Leach is the real name of Cary Grant.

the heart is a lonely hunter (1968)

alan arkin, sondra locke

robert ellis miller (dir)

This movie about a deaf mute and the lives of those around him that he touches is an introspection on isolation and other fragile human emotions. Alan Arkin delivers nuanced acting that is almost painful to watch.

gone with the wind (1939)

clark gable, vivien leigh

victor fleming (dir)

The film that invented the terms "boxoffice" and "big Hollywood movie." Everything about this movie is set in a grand scale and never mind if you haven't read Margaret Mitchell's book - this one leaves no page unturned. Action, drama and romance compacted in 4 hours - including overtures.

les 400 coups/the 400 blows (1959)

jean-pierre leaud

francois truffaut (dir)

We all love movies abouts children, but this one makes a left turn to the nonwhimsical and far from heartwarming. French new wave movement exponent Francois Truffaut uncompromisingly chronicles the life of Antoine Doinel as a juvenile delinquent.

gregory peck, mary badham

robert mulligan (dir)

One of the best film adaptations ever. The theme of injustice and prejudice as seen through the eyes of Scout, a spirited 6-year old tomboy, is beautifully told and takes the viewer to his own past, to a place in time where innocence plays in the garden of a not-so-perfect world. And who can forget that rare breed of man Atticus Finch.

cinema paradiso (1989)

mario leonardi, philippe noiret

giuseppe tornatore (dir)

This Oscar-award winning film is unapologetic in its almost manipulative nostalgia which the viewer will tend to forgive as he will be busy reminiscing about his own love affair with the movies. A celebration of life, love, friendship and the magic of cinema.

rashomon (1950)

toshiro mifune, machiko kyo

akira kurosawa (dir)

This Akira Kurosawa masterpiece uses (and introduces?) the use of perspectives in film in telling the story of the murder of a samurai and the rape of his wife in a forest. Is truth and fact altered by perspective and interpretation. Hmmm...

high noon (1952)

gary cooper, grace kelly

fred zinnemann (dir)

A movie that starts hours before noon and ends at high noon. The suspense builds up each time Marshal Will Kane looks at the clock and checks the time he has left. A classic Wild Western with Gary Cooper's gritty acting at the core.

massimo troisi, philippe noiret

michael radford (dir)

It must be my adoration of Pablo Neruda's poetry that made me fall hard for this movie set in an idyllic Italian fishing village circa 1950s. Or the telling of the inspirinng friendship between the educated and worldly poet and a fisherman's mailman son. Probably both.

crouching tiger, hidden dragon (2000)

chow yun-fat, michelle yeoh

ang lee (dir)

My gulity pleasure has always been flying kicks and Jet Li. But this one pushes the boundaries of the genre. Stunning old China backdrop and a tale as old as time. Martial arts as poetry - i'd see this more than twice a year.

fame (1980)

irene cara, eddie barth

alan parker (dir)

I am convinced that this movie is the predecessor of the reality/talent search shows on TV but with greater music, more impressive dancing, and better acting. Director Alan Parker follows the exploits of students of a school for the performing arts in New York from audition to graduation.

ladri di biciclete/the bicycle thief (1948)

lamberto maggiorani, enzo estaiola

vittorio de sica (dir)

This Vittorio de Sica 1948 opus is often considered one of the greatest and most influential neorealist films ever. In all its black and white glory lies one of the most heartbreaking moments I've ever seen. Lamberto Maggiorani (the father) and Enzo Staiola (the son) make me cry a river everytime.

infernal affairs trilogy (2002-03)

andy lau, tony leung

wai-keung lau, siu fai mak (dirs)

The conflict between Hong Kong police and the Triads is told in a sweat building pace with large doses of suspense and a plot that twists and turns until the last frame. And throw dashes of romance, drama, action and you'll get, no, not chop suey but bigtime entertainment. Oh and yes, better than The Departed.

days of heaven (1978)

richard gere, brooke adams, sam shepard

terrence malick (dir)

The barren landscape of Texas in the early 20th century is the setting for this tale of people's struggles with hard life and human emotions. This film by Stephen Malick juxtaposes a narration by an uneducated girl and breathtaking panorama resulting in cinematic mixture of bitter and sweet, love and tragedy.

todo sobre mi madre/all about my mother (1999)

cecilia roth, marisa paredes, penelope cruz

pedro almodovar (dir)

A classic Pedro Almodovar concoction, a labyrinthine plot and bigger than life characters - a transvestite, another transvestite, a pregnant nun and a problematic actress. A heady mix of love, grief, frienship and tongue-in-cheek humor. But a handkerchief is recommended.

the blair witch project (1999)

heather donahue, joshua leonard

daniel myrick, eduardo sánchez (dirs)

Of all the films here, this is the only one in my iPod. Don't ask me. The hype and the buzz that it generated in its release were not unfounded. Its cinema verite-style and the surprising lack of bloodshed and absence of visible evil all the more push the scare factor to a higher notch. At least for me.

Man, I think I've only seen 1 or 2 of the movies on your list. I'm gonna have to check some of those out. Days of Heaven looks pretty cool. And I totally agree about Superman. Superman II was my favorite movie for a really long time.

Oh boy. Interesting selection! It's neat to think about the artistic merit of the movies, rather than personal preferences.

I ain't gonna argue with any of these! ('cept LordoftheboringRings. And the Blair Witch Experiment).

Those two I would replace with Monster's Ball, which contains one of the best performances ever by anyone -- Halle Berry, and the Lion in Winter, for one of the best all round fabulous casts ever. I'm an actors' movie-watcher, I guess.

I think i know your issues with LOTR and the Blair Witch Project - but pals don't argue right? LOL

I haven't seen Monster's Ball but I did Lion in Winter - Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole and a very young Anthony Hopkins - how could it go wrong? :D

I don't know if I should post my own list. Compared with yours, mine would look a little superficial :( I'm a sucker for a good action flick unfortunately. I will tell you though that my favorite movie of all time is The Saint, with Val Kilmer :)

Teresa McGurk profile image

Teresa McGurk  says:

LOTR is beautifully shot -- the movie is GORGEOUS, it really is; and the Blair project was a neat experiment in cinematography and marketing. Nope, as you say, pals don't argue.

But if you get a chance to see Monster's Ball, it is wickedly good: Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry, Heath Ledger, Peter Boyle, Mos Def -- all people I've seen in other movies and the jury was still out, so to speak, on their individual merits; however, in this movie, they all come together with startling -- well. Brilliance. Halle Berry got the oscar for this, and you know how I love strong women leads -- but this one is worth more than one tiny paltry Oscar.

iwhy not? we're talking of favorites - meaning, by personal preferences. and besides it's a lot of fun. Yes i remember The Saint, the one with Elizabeth Shue right? Did he die in the end - i remember him jumping from a building or something. Or i'm confusing it with something else :D

Amadeus is my all time favorite. Ever. I never get tired of watching it. I must admit that i liked Blair Witch Project until I got to the end, and I was like...WTF? lol! ;)

Many of the others I haven't seen, but I'm jotting notes of ones that look interesting to me. Maybe I'll have a movie marathon weekend or something.

Now I have to go back and read your comments!

G'day Chris, Nice list I agree with High Noon, but you don't give enough credit to Grace Kelly (man was she beautiful) and the song "do not foresake me" all added to the atmoshere. I thought the movie "Shane" was just as good?

agvulpes

g'day mate! I agree with you on Grace Kelly - an angel's face if there ever was one! And the pivotal role she played - but i'm not one for spoilers! haven't seen Shane, but i'll take note of it. thanks for dropping by :D

The only thing about watching good movies now is getting the kids to sleep and not to ruin it with screams. A movie like cinema paradiso would probably take me a month to watch, its not like it used to be.

I'm surprised HSM is not on Constant's list, every other musical is.

Cris A profile image

okay i get the picture and it's tough! LOL

I was glancing through your comments and the mention of clocks reminded me of Clockwork Orange...can't remember if clockwork is one word or not. lol! Anyway, I saw it long, long ago, and I remember being taken by it. Completely. Funny, but I never see it on TV at all.

Cinema Paradiso is one of my all-time faves, too. There were some surprises.

That makes two of us. Hope you've seen the unedited version - some additional 20+ minutes or so about the "twist".

Thanks for dropping by Zeke :D

Very ecclectic pix, Cris! I don't think I've ever met anyone else who liked Blair Witch Project as much as you and I. THAT is one SCARY flick!!

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

FINALLY! Somebody who thinks the same way as me about Blairwitch! And it should be you MM, it should be you! Now all my choices are validated! (Not that they need to be, but it sure does pamper my ego and uphold my high regard for my taste LOL) Thanks for the vote of confidence :D

BOO! Scared you didn't I!

Agree with some of your choices but would probably have added 'A room with a view'; 'Beat the drum'; 'Out of Africa';The Mission'; 'Life of Brian' and 'Sophies Choice'

Cris A  says:

I haven't seen Drum and Brian but now I think I'd have to to fall under your good graces. As for the rest, yes they are great movies indeed, Perhaps I shall do a sequel?

Thanks for dropping by Ms Vine :D

I've seen 8 of these movies!

I read and watch How to kill a Mockingbird as a 7th grader. I especially love the Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger movie. Too bad Jet Li or Jackie Chan wasn't in it, but good enough. Now I'm too scared to watch the Blair Witch Project!?

Are you not in to chick flicks such as The Joy Luck Club?

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

I've seen a couple and there are great ones like Volver and All About Eve. The Joy Luck Club - now that's a real weeper! No dry eyes in the house for that one! :D

WOW, I only have seen 2 of those movies on your list; the first LOTR and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I have noticed, for being such a movie buff and fan, I sure haven't seen all the classics.

Believe it or not, I LOVE LOVE LOVE "Gone With the Wind". I get a lot of flack about it where I am from because it is considered a slavery movie, but most people that say that have not seen it. It is a romance set in slavery times. It is also a coming of age story. I have seen it twenty or more times. I also love Amadeus. I saw it for the first time in high school when I took music apprecaiton. I haven't seen about half of your choices, but from the ones that I have seen, I would have to say that you picked some winners.

Tootles!!!

Oh I believe you - alot of people feel the same way about the movie as you do! LOL Gone with the Wind was made, first and foremost, to entertain. And that's what we get, lots of it too!

What no "Blazing Saddles"? Cris A: Enjoyed your list. I would like to try to make a list some day...but twenty movies would be hard to keep it down to. Like "High Noon" and "A Fish Called Wanda" as good picks from your list.

Brenda

Haven't I told you? Well I guess not. I've recently accepted a homed-based fulltime employment. It's nothing alien from what I do here but I mostly edit. And though I'm still mostly in front of the computer - I can only manage to be as active as before when I'm done. Oh and the connection thingy didn't help either - but it's fixed now.

And I just finished watching the director's cut of The Exorcist. And indeed, many many scenes did not make it to the final version.

Wow and Holy Crow! I love about 80% of these movies, especially liked that you included Rashoman as a pick, mostly because not many people know that movie. Were it not for Akira Kurosawa, where would cinema in general be? Great hub Cris.

Cris A  says:

LOL it's good that we mostly agree on the movies here. But i'm telling you, I could have as easily done a 500 movies you must see before you die sort of list but the request only called for 20. So I tried to spread the genre...

Another favourite Kurosawa opuses would be Ran and Dreams! Thanks for dropping by :D

oooooh those eyes.... the english patient ..... Am I on the right hub here, so you like your job enough....... and you listened and obeyed good man......
