1965-66 Ford Mustang GT

Facts about The Ford Mustang GT Package 1965-1966

The first Mustang GT Package option was offered in 1965. The following 2 V.I.N. numbers have to be present in order to prove your Mustang is a factory GT.

A=289 4v
K=289 Hi-po

To be an original 65 GT, if your VIN has the K code, the Mustang must also have a manual transmission. The 65 GT with the V.I.N. code A came with either the manual or automatic tranny.

All of the GT's had heavy duty shocks, the front sway bars were a full 13/16 of an inch thick. The steering box was either power or manual, the code on the manual steering is HCC-AX, and the power steering code is HCC-AW. The shocks on the GT were also heavy duty.

Part of the 1965 GT package was an instrument panel that had gauges instead of the old idiot lights. By the time 66 Mustangs rolled out, they all had these gauges.

The horse emblems were replaced with the GT emblems on both front fenders. The lower rocker panel has a stripe, included in the stripe is the word, MUSTANG. These rocker panels on the GT will not have the moldings.

Another clue as to whether your GT is original or not, are the fog lamps. The 65-66 Mustang GT all had these lamps.

One way to tell if yours are original or added later are the mounting holes. The original factory GT had holes punched through the radiator support, not drilled. Simply look for a lip on these holes caused from the pressing. If it isn't there chances are they were drilled during a later installation.

Ford Mustang History

The first Ford Mustang busted out of the factory gate on April 17, 1964. You wouldn't believe it today, but this first Mustang had a price tag of only $2,400.00.

An amazing fact about the Ford Mustang is that the demand for the first Mustang was so great that when the first one rolled into Garland Texas in 1964, 15 individuals bid on one of these Mustangs. The winning bidder was so afraid that the car would be sold out from under him while they waited for the check to clear, that he slept in the Mustang that night.

The Mustangs have remained so popular that these Mustang Auctions continue to this day. The latest Mustang Auction will take place at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Palm Beach in April of 2009. Up for auction will be the first 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 and a pair of Mustang GT Concept Cars.

Ford had no idea that the demand for their first Mustang would be so large; they had expected to move about 100,000 cars in the first year of production, but they actually sold over 400,000 Mustangs in the first twelve months.

The 1964 Ford Mustang was so popular that parents bought over 90,000 pedal cars for Christmas presents that year.

1967 One of a Kind Ford Mustang

Love it, or hate it, this is one of the most talked about Ford Mustangs on the Internet today. All of us car enthusiasts understand the mind of the custom car builder, it's a mind straight out of sci-fi. Whatever the minds of these custom car builders can imagine, they take out of their minds and create images of solid steel. Whether or not you love it or hate it, each piece is a work of art.

One of a kind Showpiece, 1967 Ford Mustang Retractable. This Ford Mustang is a Custom Hard Top Retractable Coupe, and the only one like it in existence. This 1967 Ford Mustang is the first 67 to have these type custom Lamborghini vertical doors; built by Vertical Doors Inc.

This 67 Mustang has a Crate 302 built by Ford Racing. It sports Edelbrock Aluminum Manifold and Heads. The Mustang has a brand new "Ford Racing" Tremec T5 5 speed HD tranny. The front and rear suspension are Full "Grab-A-Track". All four wheel disc brakes. The RestoMod Wheels are Polished American Racing Torque Thrust II.

The color of the car is "Poison Ivy." The color will change from Green to Blue to Purple. The stripes change from yellow to orange. The retractable top was manufactured by Mustang Plus.

You'll be surprised to learn that this retractable top is not a new concept; Ford Motor Company contemplated doing this way back in 1965. The only reason Henry Ford didn't go through with this same idea, is the fact that he didn't like the idea that the top had no motor.

It wasn't until 1994 that Ben's Retractable Mustang built the first Mustang Retractable Top, however, this Mustang pictured is the only known 1967 Mustang to have the retractable top installed.

My Great Uncle had a baby blue 64 1/2 Mustang that he bought brand new, and drove everywhere for over 40 years. I wanted to restore it, but it was sold when he died.

Great hub! I love Mustangs, and always have. My parents bought a brand new '67 Burgandy Fastback and had it for several years--I learned to drive in that car, but they traded it in 1975, right after I got my license...for a PINTO! I never forgave them for that, lol...

But, in '77, I bought my first car--a '66 Mustang, for $450! I loved that car--wish I still had it.

I don't know if either were GT's, though...but they were fantastic cars, either way!

Thanks for the great trip down memory lane! :)
