This hub was bumped from its original publication date by the flood. Okay, it's more like swept away. But as traditions go in HubPages, an anniversary is always commemorated with a lookback or at least a hub with an extra oomph. And so I railed this one back, air dried and now I believe it's ready for your reading pleasure - or at least help you pass the time before you take a look at your AdSense account again if you don't feel like celebrating with me.

has it been a year?

I joined HubPages last year, 2008, the 19th of October. I found this site, if I remember right, while I was looking for a writing gig. It had been three months since what was decidedly then my last stint at a 9 to 5er and I was of the idea that a little blog here and there would help me pay the monthly bills, primarily from my ISP. There was absolutely no get-rich-or-die-tryin' plot. And although I was willing to wait for, say, three months, money of noteworthy amount only started trickling down my virtual coffer six months later but but BUT by then it was too late to for me to quit and blame a hub I stumbled upon (which could have been titled "make millions on HubPages in a day" when I think about it now) for the hubbingbug had me on the third consecutive day that I spent waiting for comments to make a landfall on the two hubs - a film review and an anecdotal piece about the 80s - I published on my first day. I had never anticipated for something in my entire life as extremely.

By the way, the first comment dropped on the seventh day. So biblical.

you were my first

Nothing beats a hot cuppa and a cig when you go jogging down memory lane. Coffee seems to get the blood flowing and the mind is set up like a silvery white screen by the cigarette smoke. Ahh now I see Ryan Hupfer's face...

You see, Ryan Hupfer was my first fan. I was thrilled when he came on board my fan club. Like did he really like my lame hubs? Nonetheless, I immediately fanned him back being still far from forming my own concept of fandom. I was just too happy not to return the favor and with a fan mail to boot. Needless to say, it dawned upon me eventually that he is probably most everybody's first fan. But I do not take it against him nor I depreciate his effort because it served as the welcome I needed to hang on until the seventh day when the first comment on my hub came.

It was from Benson Yeung, HubPages' resident surgeon, on my second poetry hub called hanging out. Although his comment was succinct at best, it still draws a smile on my face everytime I go back and read it for he said, and I quote, "I don't understand everything but I think it's touching and absorbing. thanks." Well now Dr. Yeung, my friend, have I been finally dissected?

When you are a stranger in a strange place, it'll take you weeks to find a friend. And in a virtual world, it takes even longer to snake your way through the comments and Forum posts to get to the core of another hubber. The avatar does not help. In fact, it only adds another surreal dimension to the "relationship". But still you persevere, knowing full well that everybody, in all probability, values their anonimity as much, or even greater than, you do. So if you become virtual friends with anyone faster than you can say "hell yeah" - you're in luck. Though I'm not sure now if I can consider myself lucky when I met my first hubber friend. Of course I jest.

Foul-mouthed but eloquent, crazy but honest, deliriously funny but real, goldentoad was my first real virtual friend. None compared to his writing but his friendship I value more. But, though it takes two to tango, it takes more people to party. And so I eventually found myself in my first virtual posse. There was C.C. Riter (now ralwus), Pest, Pam Roberson, sheenarobins, Shirley Anderson, Christoph Riley, mistyhorizon2003 to name a few. Running with the gang, I was a juvenile delinquent once again and HubPages was playground.

my personal guiness book of world records of sort

Like perhaps all hubbers, I have a few proud moments on HubPages that I shall forever remember. They are really little things that might be commonplace or are everyday occurrences but for me, they are, as the site would put it, milestones. Here's a short and quick look at them.

I became a featured hubber on my first month on the site. I have topped both the Hot Hubs and the Best Hubs lists and at one time even simultaneously topped both lists with i am taking a break from hubbing. It took me a little while to get a hubber score of 100 but I was gifted with it in February after much underhanded whining and griping. On the other hand, my top hub in terms of number of views is the one about hentai. It was posted on June 16 and, as of October 29, has been viewed 15, 410 times, averaging 149 clicks daily. Since the publication of that hub, I have been averaging 1,000 views/day or thereabouts for all of my hubs.

In January, I made my first "sale" on Amazon. I "sold" DVDs for the foreign-language movies Il Postino and Cinema Paradiso which I (sort of) reviewed in my watch me if you can "series." I was so ecstatic I started a forum thread announcing that "feat" - but I must hasten to add that it had to do more with realizing that I can actually really earn from my ads like what the other hubbers had been saying and less with bragging about the (few) dollars I earned. I have "sold" a handful of DVDs and books since then though it's still a looooooong (yeah, tha long!) way from my first payout.

As I'm largely known to be a "poet", I thought I might also give you insights on how my poems have been faring. In terms of views, the river (posted on 8/13/09) leads the way with 722 views thus far with foreplay umm hotly in pursuit of the pole position. It must be the title. But the rest are not far behind, especially the newer stuff.

highs and lows

Or it could be "highs or lows?" as the following events were either high on dynamics - as they sent most everybody abuzz and busy - or were low points - as some hubbers flexed their index fingers and engaged in virtual mud slinging. Dirty was the word. But however we ultimately classify them, they are definitely the issues that painted the face of HubPages during my first year on the site.

  • made in India? - Are they to be considered hubs? If they are indeed hubs, where are the texts? But other than the problems with classification, hubs featuring "hot Indian chicks" went under the microscope with arguments about traffic, propriety, and even the frequency of posting of these hubs and the gender of the hubbers behind them, hurled from both sides of the hubfence and found their way into the comment boxes and Forum threads.

  • things that go bump in the night - According to a hublegend, there was a hubvigilante or hubvigilantes whose business was to flag hubs they considered crass or vulgar, or worse, both. The hubvigilante or hubvigilantes went online during nonpeak hours (read: less number of hubbers online) - if such exist - and flagged "censorable" hubs repeatedly until they get picked up by the hubradar and pulled down by the hubteam. The beaten-up hubs were never to be seen again unless the hubber accepted his fate and renounce his action by posting a santized version. But then again, the hubber can quit the site altogether. And some did.

  • a rose by any other name - The guessing games involving alteregos were usually convened in the backroom, ie through emails. While some were successful in keeping their secret identity or identities secret, some were not as fortunate because: they did not know a thing about IP addresses, they unknowingly left telling comments or Forum posts, or they shared their secret with a hubber friend who in turn shared it with another hubber friend who in turn... But there are of course those who wanted (and wants) to be found out.

  • to chat or not to chat? - There was a clamor for a chat feature on the site. Again, the community was divided into three: the yes group, the no group, and the largely silent whatever group.

  • the good, the bad and the hubchallenge - 'nuff said.

days of wine and roses

Yes, mostly. But not everyday. As there are a few snags here and there along the road to hubnirvana. In my 12 months here, I would like to think I have managed to sustain my general sense of civility, if not niceness. But like in a basket of tomatoes there are bound to be...

I have been bitched at openly on the Forums or on the comment boxes of hubs, or confidentially through emails; I have been labeled an attention-seeking hubber; and I have been dropped from what I thought was my circle of hubber friends. I believe I know now what watered the seeds on these occasions and I understand - at least I try to. Like I said, I'm nice. Generally.

regrets, i have a few

I regret missing out on your hubs as I have ventured into freelance writing middle of this year and will probably head on back to the salt mine, yeah a 9 to 5er soon. Things are not what they were economically and there was, of course, the flood.

I regret missing out on your milestones.

I regret saying stupid things on the Forums and the comment boxes that might have upset you. I'm taking them all back.

I said I only have a few.

a few of my favourite things, er, hubs

For my anniversary, I originally intended to come up with my one hundredth hub to go side by side with my 100,000 views milestone. But fate works in mysterious ways and I did not get what I wanted. So I'll make do with what I have to work on.

Hands down, my most favourite, and I think my best ever ever, hub is a poem. It is called i am walking. And the only reason I can think of why I hold it dearly in my heart is what my pal, hubber Teresa McGurk, she of the massive intellect and stamp-on-your-memory wit, had to say about it. She said it's her favourite among my poetry and that she keeps on coming back for more servings. And best of all, she deemed it was even better than a Pablo Neruda opus. It can't get better than that. Ha!

Another favourite, for personal reasons, is called unsent. I shall stop short of describing this hub as I think it can very well speak for itself.

There's also this hub called hot grande, five pumps irish cream, one brown sugar, cafe americano and an ashtray please. I like it because, subject wise, it's about two of my most beloved foibles - coffee and cigarettes.

But the most fun I had writing were the hubs hate me! hate me! hate me! and it's "sequel" which I titled (surprise!) love me! love me! love me! Now I'm never known to rant - actually, I don't know how to - but the things that were happening then were too much even for the usually mild-mannered me. But subsequently, I mellowed down and, as the world has ways of balancing everything out, the follow-up begged to be written. And I acquiesced.

where are my party people at?!?!?!

And finally, I'd like to give a shoutout to my homies, my pals, my buds, my email friends without whom this past year could have been any other year spent at the 9 to 5er - routine and worse, less financially rewarding.

And so, to Sandy Marie Hoffman, Charlie Campbell, Ron McIntyre, John Stapleton, Tom Cornett (LYM!), Rich Thorp, Merle Johnson, Pam Roberson, Patricia Costanzo, Shalini Kagal, Julie Stewart, Anthony Perlingos, Sheila Escauso, Sheila Tombe, Elena Vilalta, Scott Latham, Jerilee Wei, Ginn Navarre, Michelle Richardson, Tom Rubenoff, Julie Braden, Monina Maunay, Michelle Simtoco, Brenda Scully, Marie Jimenez-Beaumont, Whikat, Tatjana, Ben Mester, Cindy, Francia, Chris Reilly, Uriel, invictus, Deb Murarenko, nazishnasim and you, I convey my gratitude.

Because of you, my cup of a heart runneth over.

Oooh,I really got wrapped up in reading your hub when I stepped into my office, that I forgot I was watching a comedy on TV. Congratulations on your 1 year with Hubpages, and thank you for counting me among your hub friends.

And yes, Goldentoad is funny; behind that though exterior is a sensitive man, one could tell through his wrtings.

Off to catch the last 10 minutes of the show. :)

w00t! Congratulations to your first year on the hub! What an adventure it has been my friend! You were my first fan--I remember I too, felt the same as you did when you first started on the hub. In a strange land---eager to see if someone like what you wrote! Ha! I so miss the hubmob that we had when everyone was online, GT, Sheena--BlondePoet, Cindy--I love tailgating all of you and giggled so very much before I said one word here!

My mentor, thank you so much for being here. And helping me to come out of my shell--I owe much of my work, and my bravery to you. Thank you for being a friend to me when I was only a fan of shadows and dust.

That is all. -superhugs-

Stumbling and grumbling one finds this place and says what the fuck is this? Easy cheesy you play along because hey, those fools ain’t the only ones with words. Never expecting fans or friends, never expecting even a hundred views, just someone, just someone to read the words you put down and say, hey…that’s alright. It encourages and pushes, and maybe somewhere in the back of your mind, you always thought it was good, but its nice to know you don’t have to convince yourself, and yes, they really, really, like you. Make a straight man feel all gay for just a second, jump up and down like Richard Simmons clapping with near tears of joy, near erection, its so exciting, makes you go back to write another one. Fading feelings, like all drugs, need more to maintain the fix. More friends to the party, an army, who’s for real, who’s kidding, who’s flagging you behind your back? Just needed someone, another voice, that’s how it all began, drop the phony acts, quit playing nice, one realizes the powers that be, secretaries with scarred up knees, with names like maddie, playin’ the boss, the official word, just wanna use you, toss you aside, letter says you never fit the program, creativity is a waste, we want useless information, like how to wipe your ass. See the joke, too bad for me. That’s okay. Got other places to be. Too bad for the friends that have to go to different colleges after high school. Wanna walk down the halls, see the trophies in the case, and point to yourself and say, yeah that was us…WE ran the shit. Never the same, new freshmen, new game, new prom king and queen, they slap their asses, give each other hugs, one day they’ll get burnt too. Never caring of the legends, got a new style, new records to show, make ol’ skool look amateur, Uh, I been here two days, got a million views, how about you? Ain’t what it was about kid, but good for you. Whatchu mean it ain’t what its about? You wanna explain, just needed a voice, another voice, one voice to be honest and real, one voice so you’re not caught talking to yourself. One voice so you avoid self illusion, there’s a witness, an expert telling you, you got the goods. Dumb freshman looks at you in pain, uh whatever, I got a million views, goldentoad who?

Mr. Pottymouth

I feel old just reading your comment. Wait a minute, it's not a comment but a hub. How easy you fall into my dirty little trick everytime. Or is it your game and I'm just the pawn not the player. Whatever. Anything to read what you have to say. It doesn't matter if you don't make sense. Sense is rational, no feelings. While you...oh you know what will come next. You always know what I'm getting. Ain't that right soulja boy.

The past year didn't change me a bit. I still hold on to the same principles? It's just that we've settled onto our game differently, eventually. But you will always be my favourite playmate - and I don't mean bunny. Maybe chupacabra. Even if I don't do stronger meds.

Guess what? Christmas is just 'round the corner. I'm feeling melancholic. Will look forward to a ferris wheel ride. Will you?

Pity you misseed the golden one on HubPages. Maybe in the next life time. Maybe. Come to think of it, 'maybe' is the word that best describes you. Look it up and you'll see what I mean. You always see what I mean eventually anyway. :D

I don't care about the views either. I just thought you'd be interested in knowing how a "non-commercial" writer like me fares in terms of views, adsense and the whole shebang. Not bad I'd say.

We will, if we focus on having fun and nothing else like we always do. Gracias mi amiga.

@AMW

Alright. But are you back back? Or just back? Or just dropping by? Whatever, it's nice to see you again.

Wow! I thought I was phantasmagorical and there you go thinking the same thing! Ha! LOL

Ok silly...silly...silly. I smiled, laughed and then you mentioned my name, tearjerker Cris...and smiled again. I thoroughly enjoyed the jog with you on memory lane. How did we all became so close like this? I do miss the toad.

Congratulations, Cris. As promised, I read this with a cup of Nescafe. In my eyes, you are the best. I'm proud of you.

Eloquently written in a passive what will be will be tone. Sorry that you had to return to work after hubbing and freelancing. I was taking notes from your writing and started to try freelancing but it may be the same as hubbing after all.

Congrats on getting over 15,000 views on one article now I have a milestone to reach for an articles that presently have over 8,000 views. Because I am quite dedicated to writing, I for one do not frequent the forum even though Hubpages is a social content. That was a smart move after reading about your experiences there. Wish you luck on your new job.

exactly the same thoughts when I started. you'll enjoy your stay, that's for sure. good luck and don't forget to have fun :D

@sheena

Ah we sure did have some good times, didn't we? And I enjoyed writing this, going back and forth to faces and events...What a year!

Hey thanks for the kind words - I just do what I think I do best. And it makes me even happier that I can make you happy somehow. Thanks, my friend :D

@linda

From what I know, you're not doing bad yourself! So keep going at it, but always with a smile as it is easier that way. I personally believe that good writers are read and followed and I'm sure your time to hit the bigtime will come in no time. So good luck and again, thanks for celebrating with me :D

Thanks for celebrating with me.

what is work, after all? Who thought it up? Nothing is work if you're having fun - so have fun, no matter what! I mean it. Have fun - OR ELSE! (or else it's work, and we don't want that!) I was wondering what kinda person makes it thro a year here - so you're it! Love it.

Work is something that you do and expect payment for doing. I think! LOL Hey, just enjoy and don't cross out days on the calendar. You'll be celebrating your first anniversary in no time (ie, a year's time!)

@Artemus

Thanks for reading. Yeah, I'll see what I can do :D

@RB

No problem - and I'm glad I (sort of) did. The angel might be planning a second coming. Who knows? :D

hey cindy

I will try, promise. Of course, you were there all the time. I just hope rockinjoe makes a comeback and it will be like the old times again.

Things are not the same but I have to make do with what's left and move on from there. Thanks for always being around :D

Agreed, that would be great, but he seems to have vanished, and last time I heard from him was via email at least four months ago when he was struggling for work in his comedian day job due to recession etc. I suppose you could try emailing him too, as the more who ask him to return the better the chances he will. I will email him again too if I know there will be at least a couple (or more) of us trying to persuade him to return to hubpages !

Cris, What a wonderful hub! I am honored to be mentioned, and blessed to be called your friend. I have learned so much from you and your wonderful hubs. Thank you for sharing your beautiful thoughts, poems, and artistry this last year. I am looking forward to seeing your work for many years to come my friend. P.S I had a dream about you the other night. I did not see you in it, but many people were bringing up your name. You were some big shot with a lot of power and influence. :-)

hey there stranger

Thanks for dropping by. Nah, it's a pleasure reading your hubs so I should be the one thanking you. If only you'd write more.

Yeah, I'm still on a recovery mission. But I must tell you that I lost my two treasured prints (I can only dream of having the real deal!) from MoMA (sigh). Both Riveras (dont ask me why him)
