my husband and his bike
my husband and his bike

the thrill of the ride

The first time I ever sat on a motorcycle much less ride one, I would have to say was when my husband bought the one he is sitting on in the photo. When he bought the bike he came in the house and asked me to come outside to see what he had. Of course my thought was what's he done now. Then I saw the bike sitting out in the driveway. He looked at me and asked what I thought about it. I told him if he wanted it then that was fine but don't expect me to ever get on it. No way, No how, forget it!

He looked at me, and said. " You told me that if I was to ever get another bike you wanted to ride, well here's the bike don't you dare break that promise." Well! wouldn't you know it he had me there. He had a point. The last time he had a bike I got mad because, he had sold it .Before I had a chance to get to ride it, and I did tell him that If he ever got a new one that I would go for a ride with him. So! scared as I was, I got on, wrapped my arms around his wast closed my eyes and held on for dear life!!

I felt the engine rev up and vibrate underneath of me,as I took my place on the back on the back of the bike, and then we were off. Like we were shot out of a cannon. I thought to myself this thing is going way to fast to satisfy me. somebody stop this crazy thing and let me off. But then wait a minute there is a part of me that actually likes the thrill of ridding this thing. There is no one in the world around just Woody, the bike and me. Were in our own little world, and Woody is my pilot. Its like were flying and he's my superman. It was at that point I started to calm down and relax . After we got home I made him a promise that before it got to cold that I would get over my fear enough to go for a real good ride.

That day happened one Sunday we decided to go see my mother and we went on the bike. Man what a thrill it was! I still was not over the fear quite as well as I should have been, but I managed. When I got on the bike I felt like I was going to fall off backward when Woody took off. But once that was over everything was fine. I started to enjoy the ride, the changing of the season with the reds, yellows, oranges, greens and browns of fall. Off in a distance I could smell grass being cut for the last time. Then further down the road I could smell someone cooking chicken man did it ever smell good. I thought to myself now that is something you don't notice when your driving in a car.

Then I thought to myself as I was riding down the road on the back of the bike with Woody, look how we are as one. When he leans I lean we both move together. but wait there was something else I noticed. It wasn't about us it had something to do with other bikers that we met. I noticed that when we came upon other fellow bikers the dropped a hand to one side could it be a bikers code? or could it be a simple gesture of hello? i never noticed that before.

I began to take notice of other things that I never took notice of when I'm in a car. If you look down on the ground you can see a shadow of you and the bike, then all of a sudden there is this huge dark shadow that swallows yours up. you turn around it and find your shadow has been swallowed up by other vehicles, and there you are again to be swallowed up again.

I also noticed there isn't much between me and the concrete. Except hope, prayer, and faith in the driver, and other drivers should have respect for  people on the bike. I caught myself hoping that no one followed to close and that no one would cut us off. I never worried about that when I was in a car. Of course I always showed the bikers the respect they deserved when the were in front of me. I never cut them off or followed to close. I was always afraid that if I did something would happen to them and they could not stop fast enough. not to mention its against the law.

My husband has introduced me to motorcycle riding and I enjoy it. As a mater of fact I find it pretty relaxing. Just as he said, I would. now that it's gotten to cold to ride. I regret that the season changed to quickly. maybe next year we can take a trip to the mountains of Kentucky and spend the weekend. Who knows maybe there will be another article in the makes. Time will only tell.
