Memorial Day

On May 25 in 2009 this year Memorial day was held on a Monday. Most people of the United States honor those who have fallen for Memorial Day by going to the cemeteries of our fallen hero's to place flowers on their graves. Many brave soilders gave their lives to protect our great country, and Memorial Day was set aside to honor them. All across America people put up flags in front of there houses and in front of businesses.

Veterans of Foreign Wars members will stand outside businesses and ask for donations. They will give you poppies around the time before memorial day for your donations. The poppy's relevance for Memorial Day can be tracked back to the famous poem by up and coming writer John McCrae which is names "In Flanders Fields".

National Memorial Day Concert

A concert called the National Memorial Day Concert will be held at the west lawn of the United States Capitol on Memorial Day. You do not have to go to the concert to listen to the presentation. The Public Broadcasting Station as well as the National Public Radio will be broadcasting this special advent for those who couldn't make the trip.

President Lyndon Johnson on 05/26/1966 signed the proclamation recognizing Waterloo, New York as the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

A nice way to celebrate Memorial day is to decorate your profiles with Myspace Military Graphics and you can enjoy them today with your family.

For more about Memorial Day I recommend the book by Jacqueline S. Cotton titled "Memorial Day" It is a children's book but I love to read it with my children every year, maybe you can start this tradition with your family too.

For further information about the history of Memorial Day I recommend the site Memorial Day Tribute This resource is full of in-depth information regarding Memorial Day.
