Nancy Drew – The Teen Detective Hits the Big Screen
65
Nancy Drew is a teenage female detective and the star of a series of mystery novels which have been in print since 1930. She has also been the star of four films that were released in the 1930s. She was also portrayed in the 1977 television series The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, as well as a short-lived 1995 series. In 2003, ABC ran a made-for-television movie about the character. Now, in 2007, Warner Brothers Pictures will release a new Nancy Drew feature film, simply titled Nancy Drew.
Emma Roberts, the niece of legendary actress Julia Roberts, will portray the titular character. Emma Roberts made her acting debut at age nine in the film Blow, opposite Johnny Depp. Since then, she has appeared in almost a dozen movies and television shows, including America’s Sweethearts with her Aunt, Julia Roberts. Other actors in the film include Kay Panabaker, Amy Bruckner, Max Thieriot, and Rachael Leigh Cook from She’s All That and Josie and the Pussycats. Tate Donovan, who was a regular on Friends as well as The O.C., will play Carson Drew, Nancy’s father.
The film will be rated PG and is directed by Andrew Fleming, the director of such films as Dick and Threesome. I don’t know if a guy who directed a movie called Threesome, as well as a movie entitled Dick, should be directing a movie about a teen girl detective.
Andrew Fleming also wrote the screenplay, along with Tiffany Paulsen. This is Paulsen’s first writing credit, but she has had experience acting in such films as Love 101, The Next Best Thing, and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.
Check out the trailer for PG rated Nancy Drew, which hits theaters on June 15, 2007. Mad props for mentioning Smallville in the movie! Eh, mad props? What am I thinking?
