73INTRODUCTION
Travel and Tourism one of the world's largest foreign exchange earner among industries, provides employment directly to millions of people worldwide and indirectly through many associated service industries. Work in the travel and tourism industry is essentially concerned with providing services for people who are away from home, on business or holiday. If you possess a pleasant personality, excellent communication skills and love for traveling - a career in travel& tourism can be the best bet for you. This profession is all about making traveling a heartening and pleasant experience. The desire to explore the unknown and the unseen has been sustaining the human spirit since ages. The advancement of technology has enabled the world populace to fulfill this desire.
A very wide industry, it includes Government tourism departments, Immigration and customs services, travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, hotels etc and many associated service industries such as airline catering or laundry services, Guides, Interpreters, Tourism promotion and sales etc. Travel can be leisure travel involving package tours, pilgrim travel, adventure travel etc or purely business. As the travel and tourism industry prospers, it is creating new job opportunities in this sector. In fact, according to a study conducted by the Elixir Web Solutions' Business Intelligence Team, the travel, tourism and hospitality industry will create more than 7 million job opportunities in India over the next 10 years! The study also pegs the existing work force in these industries at 41.8 million!
CAREER IN TRAVEL AND TOURISM INDUSTRY

In fact, it is said that this industry will employ greater number of people than the software industry, the current hot employment provider in India. Besides, the transportation sector too will benefit from the tourism boom in India.It is boom time for India! From the economic boom, information technology boom, to real estate boom, it is now a tourism boom! And this spells good news for employment opportunities in this sector. It has multiple sectors or smaller industries that work in collaboration. Each sector has its own importance and characteristics. Like custom department where officers check the luggage for illegal goods and items. Guides young graduates who have an interest in history and languages find this profession quite intriguing, since it gives them opportunities to meet new people, enhance their research skills, get good salaries etc. Knowledge of other languages is generally preferred.

There are four departments of a travel agency :
- Accounts, handles the billing for individuals and groups
- Tours, deal in in-expensive packaged tours, with the accomodation, food, transport etc. all taken care of
- Travel, provide detailed information on routes, costs
- Cargo, covers the booking and recovery of all cargo from the destination points connected by either Air, rail or road
The Department of Tourism in the Government does major amounts of work for the international market, in formulating policies, developing centres to attract tourists, providing adequate transport, advertising the different spots and publicising the various experiences, providing accurate information on all possible tourist areas.

ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility for cetification courses is 10+2. While the eligibility for admission to travel and tourism courses at undergraduate lavel is normally kept as 10+2 pass, at post graduation lavel, eligibility is graduation in any feild in addition to pass in the entrance test. This is followed by group discussion and interveiw.
An outgoing friendly personality; ability to handle people and verbal fluency is very important for the success in this industry.
After completing the course you may find the job in the public as well as in private sector.
The good thing about this industry is that one can always move up the career ladder fast and establish his own agency after a few years as this industry is a comparatively new one and hence lacks experienced individuals.
CAREER OPTIONS
After completing the course you may get a good job in Travel Agencies, Hotels, Airlines, Tour Operators, Road Transport,Tourism Department, Holiday Consultants and Banks.
The hotel sector requires a large amount of manpower, with a wide variety of skills from housekeeping to computers. People with specialized training for food and beverage, recreation, marketing, accounting, security, fire-fighting, public relations and so on are much needed in this sector. There are many institutes that offer hotel management and candidates from institutes like the one at The Ministry of Tourism & Delhi Tourism, Delhi have good future prospects. Many hotels also offer overseas training opportunities, which allow young people to gain promotions rapidly. In India alone, about 1, 80,000 vacancies are expected to be filled within the next decade. India attracts a large number of tourists every year. It is the most popular tourist destination in the whole of South Asia, accounting for approximately 50% of visitors to this region. Besides the rich cultural heritage, India offers a unique combination of natural beauty, architectural excellence, historical importance and modern city life. The Taj Mahal, Golden Temple, Kanyakumari, Meenakshi temple, Goa's beaches, Jaipur palace, Udaipur palace and Mumbai's metropolitan lifestyle are amongst the most sought after tourist attractions.
Transport As we know, transport can mean anything which takes us from one place to another - by air, road, railway, sea etc. The two main areas we will discuss are air and road transport. Travel by air - Post Second World War saw a tremendous change in travel, with the increased access to air travel. People got more opportunities to see other places and tourism advanced at a high pace.
Working in an airline, whether on the ground staff or in flight is an exciting option for many people these days. Foreign airlines like Aeroflot, British Airways, Royal Jordanian have all been granted new land rights and additional flights. Many of the top airlines like Cathay Pacific, ones based in Hong Kong, Emirates offer attractive salaries and numerous benefits to their flight attendants. The jobs in airlines are challenging ones but worth the struggle. Travel by road - Coaches, tourist cars employ numerous people every year. This arena has the added advantage that there is scope for self-employment. Presently, drivers with good conversational skills, who are educated, bi- or multi-lingual are much in demand. Bank loans are available for those wishing to invest in vehicles for this purpose.
