There are two primary reasons to by a new computer monitor: Either your old one went out or you want to upgrade. Generally, for most consumers, they wait until their old one goes out before they purchase a new one. Most of the time, those with an old school CRT monitor continue to use it even with a newer computer, because they are comfortable with it. They also keep using it due to the reliability. 

CRT monitors, along with their television counterparts, have a long shelf life. They last far beyond what consumers think they will get out of it. This is what keeps these particular folks from upgrading. They hear that LCD and flat screen monitors do not last as long, that they can burn in or have dead pixels. This scares consumers into simply sticking with what they know best, even if they are using outdated technology with the latest and greatest computer.

If a consumer is forced to upgrade, then they have no choice now to buy a new monitor. Since CRT monitors are no longer made, the only way they can get their hands on one is garage sales, eBay and other online sources. However, this is still outdated technology that a consumer should avoid for one primary reason. Older monitors may not always work with new computers. They may not display the right colors, resolutions and other graphic artifacts. This can conflict with their new computer system and make it impossible to enjoy.
