The History of the New York Giants

The city of New York was introduced to the New York Giants Oct 1925 when the Giants stepped out on the field against the Frankford Yellow Jackets. The score was 14-0 with the New York Giants losing this game and the previous two before this one.

Tim Mara, a bookie which was not illegal in 1925, purchased the Giants for five hundred dollars. Although football was not as popular as other sports, like baseball, and boxing, Tim believe football was a good business investment.

The Giants financially situation was less than stellar the first couple of years. However they won in their third season (1927). During the Depression Tim Mara suffer financially and gave control of the Giant to his sons, Jack and Wellington.

In 1934 the Giants won against the Chicago Bears. It was so cold during the game that head coach, Steven Owen gave the Giants basketball shoes and the game was forever called the "Sneaker Game". The basketball shoes worked better on the icy turf.

During WWII many players went off the fight the war, but the NFL continued to play. All team suffered low turnout, and the threat of teaming merging. The Giants came out of WWII without merging.

Throughout the 1950 until 1963 the team shined and became household names. But good times don't last forever. In 1963 the team suffered multiple injuries and old players leaving the game.

In 1970 the Giants found themselves with four different stadiums they called home, played out of three different states, and missed every post-season game. The team was in transition. This transition period lasted until the 1980's. The team got a wild card spot and won. Their two NFC East division win put the team far the bad luck 70's. The Giants first superbowl game was also in the 80's. In 1986 the team was back on top.

Their second superbowl win came in 1990 against the Buffalo Bills. And then changes creped into the glorious period again. The was massive coaching changes, quarterback trouble, and a blast from the past feeling took over the team. Only a month from their second superbowl win the Mara family sold a 50% to Preston Robert Tisch, and brought on a new coach in 1993 - Dan Reeves, who was later name NFL coach of the year.

Dan Reeves didn't stay in 1997 Jim Fassel was introduced as the new head coach. In 2002 the Giants got the wild card again but lost to the San Francisco 49er. Again in 2004 a new coach was introduced, Tom Coughlin. Tom Coughlin is the 16th head coach of the New York Giant.

And we all know - 2008 the Giants won Superbowl XLII.
