Lure with Keywords

Any social marketing strategy needs to start with good keyword analysis. In Twitter, that analysis starts with listening to your intended target audience for the words they use to describe your business.

The best way to listen to and connect with your niche is through tools like Twitter Search and #hashtags. Utilizing the information gained through these tools in your Twitter marketing strategy can prove extremely beneficial.

Twitter is a huge community, with millions of users. Consequently, the most effective way to attract a focused customer segment is by drawing in searches and triggering re-tweets. These techniques rely on good, consistent keywords in your Twitter messages and associated profile.

Make Your Message a Conversation

Keywords strategy extends to your message. Expertise and education on your niche will blaze a compelling trail to your product or service. Twitter communities are assembled around "authorities" and moved to action by influencers. Your objective is to either become one or co-opt several to your message.

Unlike keywords, messages should contain variety to bring diversity and opportunity. Often being too consistent and uniform with Twitter messages will draw industry specific connections--putting you into the echo chamber, instead of an audience of customers. So, to gain maximum results with your social marketing campaign feel free to bounce between web 2.0 and real estate, while throwing in a little baseball.

Provide Helpful Content

Being helpful to your connections probably trumps keywords and messages. If you are pushing and promoting useful information you will attract loyal followers. If you are cross-promoting your network you are going to get promoted. Give value first and you will spark action into your own social marketing campaign.

Robert-

It seems that what people want, not much time for fluff, you seem to have a similar approach.  While I'm new to Hubpages, I'm hopeful that approach will benefit other hubbers as well.

Hi Travis,

Very nice hub and information. Twitter is something that I have not used yet, but I think the benefits if used properly can be incredible. As you show, some of the basic concepts apply to many social tools available today, and Value is at the top of that list.

Thanks for sharing, and as Roberto said, it's nice and to the point, I like that too,

Mike

You don't have to approve comments: its a setting on the comment module - when in edit mode!

Twitter is on my todo list but this is a helpful guide and actually gives me an idea of where to start with it! Thanks

Lissie-

Thanks for the tip, very cool! I would encourage you to just get started with Twitter, let the strategy come together later, get familiar with how it works, and what others are doing to be successful, then consider strategy moreso.

Good news is, while Facebook, Plaxo and others have a 'friend limit (those two 5K and 1K respectively) at this time Twitter has no follower limitation.

There are other great uses for twitter, and ways to use it for business, but I'll save that for another time.
