Nightwish was formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1996 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Nightwish has been a pioneering band in the development and increasing popularity of symphonic metal and symponic power metal.

Nightwish has been prominent in their home country since the release of their debut album Angels Fall First, they didn't gain worldwide fame until the release of the albums Oceanborn and Wishmaster, which were released in 1998 and 2000.

Their 2004 album, Once, led to Nightwish video gaining notoritety on MTV in the United States. Next the band parted ways with it's lead vocalist Tarja Turunen, which left fans uncertain about the future of the band.

In May, 2007, Anette Olzon was announced as Turunen's replacement,and shortly thereafter nightwish released a new album, Dark Passion Play. This album left fans with no doubt that nightwish is here to stay!
