By opting for a beach wedding as opposed to the traditional indoor or church wedding you could consider yourself to be breaking from tradition. Why not exercise a similar freedom in your wedding cake.Think not of breaking from tradition but opting for the tradition of practicality.

I imagine that cakes were more like biscuits before the invention of egg beaters and baking powder so I guess tradition hasn't always been a big 7 tiered cake.

Seeing as the Guinness book of world records was not even invented way back when...so, there couldn't be contests for the biggest wedding cake.Imagine there would have been a 10ft long cake at every wedding in order to feed all guests. How impractical!

I presume this was the main reason for stacking of wedding cakes which seemingly came about more for convenience than aesthetic appeal,it would be simpler to transport around.

Similarly for your beach wedding take into account convenience and practicality when selecting the type of your wedding cake.

Today the world is a smaller place and brides are spoilt for choice. you can even opt for Croquembouche, the traditional french wedding cake,a mass of profiteroles huddled together by caramelized sugar or chocolate.

You could opt for a small main cake and 4 others of different flavors in case you loved all and couldn't decide on one cake.

The recent cupcake trend is also increasingly popular. If you have a small wedding reception they this may be a suitable option. You could even personalise each cupcake with the appropriate guests name.

Choices can be overwhelming follow the three easy steps when choosing your beach wedding cake;

1. THE TYPE and SIZE OF THE CAKE

  • The types will be determined by personal preference but use your number of guest as a guide for the size of cake you choose.

2. THE FLAVOR OF THE CAKE

  • This include the cake itself and filling between

3. THE DECORATION

Keep in tmind that he price can increase depending on the amount of detail you put in. Plain iced cakes with fresh flowers can be a cost effective option.

A slice of wedding cake may be just the sweet conclusion to your special beach wedding day, but if you love desserts, and can't make up your mind choosing one cake then why not indulge your fantasies in dessert buffet.

Whats your Flavor?

Once you've decided on the type of cake you will be serving at your beach wedding, you will have to get down to choosing the flavor. Keep in mind you should have an idea of guest allergies or health conditions, e.g lactose intolerance, nut allergies, or diabetes and you could try to incorporate the guests needs. For example this is where the small cake options come in handy, you Can have a variety to choose form thereby catering for the varying needs of your guests.

Dressed for Sucess

Without doubt, it is the outside appearance of your wedding cake that will get guests talking.

Choices are endless but can be curbed by setting a few guidelines. Decide on a specific color scheme or theme and stick to it.Don't go over the top with mismatched combinations or too elaborate decorations, keep it simple for success.

A few fresh favorites for beach weddings are to incorporate tropical fruit for a fresh summer taste.

Fruit decorated cakes can be made of marzipan, which is relatively simple to make.I always recommend a professional baker for your wedding cake, but couldn't help sharing this marzipan recipe (which you could try out for your future baby showers or tea parties).

Ingredients

Makes 2 1/4 pounds

  • 1 pound almond paste
  • 1 pound confectioners' sugar
  • 1/3 cup light corn syrup

Directions

Place almond paste and confectioners' sugar into food processor and give it swirl for about a minute or two.i.e two pulses. Add corn syrup; pulse eight more times, or until mixture holds together when pinched. Transfer to clean work surface; placing on a plastic film sheet works well.Knead until mixture forms a smooth dough. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap. You can use immediately to shape into your desired decoration or refrigerate for later use.

Ok back to beach wedding cakes. Marzipan or fresh fruit topping can give your beach wedding cake a tropical twist.

Alternatively you could opt for fruit confits, or candied fruit, is a slow process in which water contained in the fruit is gradually replaced by sugar syrup. A cascade of shiny glazed fruit on a pure white cake makes a simple tropical statement. You can also compliment this cake with other fruity delights like lemon-zest sponge cake or diced fresh fruit on a kebab stick.

If you are going for a sea themed beach wedding then why not consider a 'sushi' or 'chowder; cake...all made with sugar off course.
