About Nose Piercings

The second most popular type of body piercing in the world after ears is the nostril piercing. A longtime presence in Indian, African and South Pacific cultures, in the last two decades this small bit of body jewelry has gone from rare to everywhere in the US and Europe. Yet as prevalent as this piercing seems, it can be tricky to heal without complications and is cause of some debate in the professional working world.

Here is information on the types of nose piercings you can get, healing and aftercare tips, options for nose jewelry, videos of nose piercings being done, how to recognize if you have an infection, some piercing "no-nos" to avoid and much more.

Take the Nose Piercing Poll!

Do you think employers/businesses are over-reacting when they make people take out or cover their nose piercings for work?

  • Yes, they are over-reacting. Nose piercing are so common now, they are no big deal.
  • No, they are not. A nose piercing isn't "professional."

Types of Nose Piercings

Nostril - this is the most common place for a nose piercing. The jewelry is placed somewhere along the rim of the nostril, either on the left or the right side of the nose. There is no significance or meaning to which side you get pierced, it's just your own preference. A ring or stud is best for starting but make sure the jewelry is not too tight to the nose if it is a stud. That can lead to healing problems.

Septum - these piercings are placed in the cartilage wall between the chambers of the nose, at the bottom of the nostrils. It's sometimes called a "bull ring" as you sometimes see cattle with this style of nostril piercing. It can be a bit sensitive to pierce, or if the ring gets snagged. This is the only type of nose piercing that can be made completely and truly invisible.

Bridge - sometimes called an "Earl" piercing after the first man to regularly get this type of jewelry, this piercing is done on the surface of the nose, through the skin of the bridge of the nose. This is the hardest to heal and carries the most potential for rejection or healing out.

Types of Nose Jewelry

Ring - a tiny captive or fixed bead ring is very popular for nose piercings, and is the best-recommended for starter jewelry until the initial healing period is over as they make it easy to clean the piercing thoroughly and it allows room for any swelling.

Screw - a nostril screw is a style of jewelry from India and have become very popular in Western piercing. It has a short post which then goes into a small curl. This curl takes the place of a backing and holds the jewelry in place.

Bones/Pins/Studs - This is a short post-style piece of jewelry with a small bead or decoration that rests on the outside of the nostril. Items described as "bones" or "pins" often do not have a conventional backing. Sometimes they are just a straight post and sometimes the inside end terminates with a larger bead end. I get a lot of email from people complaining that bones are hard to get in and out and are painful to change. DO NOT GET THIS TYPE OF JEWELRY WHEN YOU FIRST GET YOUR NOSE PIERCED. Essentially, you'll just wind up ripping it out of your nose later if you ever want to change it.

U-Bend - this is a jewelry option just for septum piercings. It is a small "U" shaped piece that can be worn with the ends flipped up inside the nostrils, thus making the piercing undetectable. This is the only type of nose piercing jewelry that can truly be entirely invisible.

Spikes - this is another jewelry option for septums, and sometimes bridge piercings. It's essentially a straight taper worn horizontally through the piercing, with pointed ends that stick out. Not for new piercings!

HELP, MY JEWELRY IS DISAPPEARING INTO MY PIERCING!

If you have a brand-new nose piercing and the jewelry has sunken into it or even one end has vanished inside it, it means you picked a poorly-trained body piercer to do your nose. Sad but true.

Pierced noses swell up and the size of the piercing channel is not stable, and back when I first started getting pierced in the late 1980s, body piercers seemed to know this. Now so many people doing nose piercings have almost no training and it's literally hurting the customers. The jewelry that you start out with for a new pierced nose should NOT be the smallest you can get. This is why a reputable piercer will refuse to put in a teeny stud and why ring-style jewelry is really recommended to start. This prevents the jewelry from being pulled inside the piercing. Once your nose has healed (3 months later) then you can re-evaluate the size of the piercing and pick smaller jewelry.

If you have a stud that is disappearing into the piercing, you need to go back to where you got pierced and have them switch the jewelry to be something with a longer post and with a larger outside bead, or better yet, get a proper nose ring.

Some Nose Piercing No-Nos (and ways to avoid them!)

Here is the healing and aftercare info that answers the questions I get asked the most frequently. If you post a question in the comments section and it's answered here, I'm just going to delete it to save repetition.

  1. Do not get your nose pierced with a piercing gun! These were not invented for noses and the jewelry is very blunt and often way too tight. This increases your chances of infection, keloids (bumps) and scarring. But the really big reason is that the employees of places that use these tools are not trailed properly about blood-born disease transmission and the piercing guns are not sterilized properly in between customers to prevent the spread of HIV or Hepatitis C!

  2. Do not wear sterling silver in a new/healing pierced nose! The tarnishing of this metal worn in a healing piercing can permanently stain the skin, leaving a black mark around the piercing site that will NEVER go away. I have no knowledge of any method for getting rid of the staining.  New nose piercings need to be healed wearing stainless steel, niobium, titanium or 14k gold.

  3. Do not change your nose jewelry too soon! Noses take three months to fully heal and some people find that if they take out the jewelry sooner, the piercing collapses or closes down and they can't get any jewelry back in, thus losing the piercing entirely. Changing jewelry too soon can also re-tear the inside of the healing piercing and make you start the healing process all over again.  If you have some sort of crisis with a piece of jewelry and you really have to change it out, go back and see your piercer who can swap the jewelry in a way that doesn't let the piercing close down on you.

  4. Do not use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean your new piercing! They both can cause tissue burns and increase irritation, which slows down healing and increases the chances of scar tissue or "bumps" forming.

  5. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and swimming in the ocean during the healing period. Chlorine and other chemicals used to maintain public pools are very bad for the healing tissues. The danger from the ocean is bacterial infection from pollution contaminants. Also, if you exercise or sweat very heavily, the toxins that the body releases in perspiration can also irritate piercings, so be sure to rinse or wash off your face when you get done playing sports or working out.

How To Recognize An Infection

The tissue trauma of getting a nose piercing causes some redness, tenderness and swelling and these may not show up for a day or two after the initial piercing. Being sore and a little red after getting a nose piercing is completely normal.

It's when you've got all of the following going on that you most-likely have a problem.

Infections are most-often characterized by:

  • increasing redness
  • increasing tenderness and pain
  • increasing swelling
  • discharge that is yellow or green in color

If you think you have an infection, go back to see your piercer again or go see a doctor! I am not a medical professional and cannot tell you if you have an infection or not based on a comment or description!

What Happens When You Take Out A Nose PIercing?

I'm getting more and more of this category of question as nose piercing continues to be popular, but this is one of the more gray areas of piercing.

If I have to take out a nose ring temporarily, how long does my nose have to be healed before the hole will try and close? - No clue. Some people's nose piercings are very stable after the initial 3 month healing period and some take much longer. There's no way to be able to tell when the piercing becomes stable. Some never do.

Will the hole close up after I take out my nose ring? - Mostly. No one can predict how your own nose will choose to respond once you take out the jewelry, but the hole will shrink down. However no one can predict how much. You might wind up with a small dimple or it might be barely noticeable.

Kristen, rubbing alcohol is more irritating to healing tissues and won't do anything to reduce scarring, in fact, it may have contributed to it. My best advice on getting rid of "nose bumps" is in the eBook I wrote, http://www.bellaonline.com/ebooks/ebook33

Sarah, most likely the acne facewash would be overly-drying and irritating to a new nose piercing. If your skin is very problematic, healing could be more difficult. You might want to let a few years go by and see if time settles your skin issues more.

i have a coil on the inside of my nose, so how do i clean it without taking out the whole ring? ive only had my nose pierced for about 2 weeks and im scared to take it out but im also afraid it will get infected if its not clean

ok so i got my nose pierced in may of this year. This summer i started having problems with it. On the inside of my nose i started having a bump and the place i got it pierced at said it was just hypotrophic scarring and to put rubbing alcohol on it which i am now finding out is bad for the piercing. Recently, I developed a bump on the outside of my nose right under my piercing...it comes and goes but I am really worried that it is going to stay. What should I do to make it go away.? I have heard so many different ways but am not sure what to do. It has got to the point that I just want ot get it to heal so i can take it out. Please help me out!

I use an acne face wash twice daily and have blackheads on my nose, but I really would like to get my nose pierced. Would i need to discontinue the face wash for a while or can I simply be careful around the piercing? Also, does having acne on my nose make me more succeptible to infection?

Thanks!

Emily, the blood bubble is not normal and I'd bet it is entirely related to the fact that you keep covering it. To be honest, I tell people that if a job or school doesn't allow piercings, it's best to just not have them. You may wind up permanently scarring your face because you are preventing your nose from healing properly by bandaging it constantly. Whether you go see your piercer or not is your decision.

emily  says:

okey thank you. i have to cover it for work tho... but it this bubble normal? it is sort of freaking me out. should i see my pericer ?

relache profile image

relache  says:

Emily, it could be from either. You don't want to be covering it with bandages, as that's going to prevent it from getting air, as well as putting tension on the piercing, both of which can cause healing problems or really slow down the healing process.

Emily  says:

My nose ring has been done for like almost 4weeks. ive been recently getting blood bubble around it.. its like the size of the ring. if i poke it .. it bleeds. is it from sleeping on it? or covering it with bandages.. or what is it. i hope its all okey. cause i LOVE my piercing

Vicky, your nose hasn't stabilized yet from the sound of things. Essentially, when you put in the smaller stud, your nose piercing tightens up or shrinks down (depending on how you look at it) and then, you have trouble getting the larger stud back in. I'd suggest you commit to owning one size or the other and let your nose adjust to that one size. The forcing larger jewelry back in might give you problems over time.

Vicky G  says:

I had my nose pierced at a salon (with a gun) about 3 months ago. I still have the orignal stud in that it was pierced with. However, from time to time I like to put in a smaller one that I got from claires. When I do, (even if its just for an hour), when I put my orignal stud back in, I basically have to repierce my nose again. Its very tender and hurts just as much as it did the frist time. Is this normal?? When is it okay to switch from the orignal stud to one of those tiny ones you can get at claires??

Daisy, feeling tender doesn't automatically equate with an infection, and in fact, a healed piercing shouldn't get infected easily. However, if the jewelry changeover scratched, bumped or snagged something inside, that could be it. Take care of it gently and keep an eye for true signs of infection.

Daisy  says:

Hi, I've had my nose pierced for about 6 months now, it healed very quickly. After I was sure it was fully healed, I changed it from a stud to a hoop every two weeks or so with no problems. I recently did this again, and put the stud it; but this time it feels hugely tender and bruised, and its hard to move around, do you think it is infected? Thanks, Daisy,

blackroserei, the indent could be from the jewelry being too tight to your nose. Or it could be from the pressure that occurs when you sleep on it. You might want to have the fit checked by your piercer, the jewelry should not be snug. That could also help with the skin trying to grow over it. Having a little "play" in the fit lets your nose know the jewelry isn't a part of your body, which is what it's thinking right now.

blackroserei  says:

I've had my nose piercing for about three weeks and have occasionally jostled it. I'm starting to get worried because around the stud there is sort of a shallow indent that its sitting in (the size of the stud). Also it seems as though the skin on the inside of my nose is growing over the curved bar part of the piercing. Do you have any idea why there is an indent (do I need to go to the piercing parlor to have them adjust the jewelry?) and any idea as to why the skin on the inside of my nose is starting to grow on and over the piercing?

Alisia, since noses are cartilage and not soft tissue, they don't stretch or shrink the way the soft parts of the ears do. The only way you can really tell is to give the new jewelry a try. You may find it's too loose for your tastes, or it might fit just fine.

alisia  says:

I've had my nose pierced for about 1 year, and from what I can tell, it's healed pretty properly. I recently got a new stud and ring for my bithday, but I realized when I compared the sizes of the 3 (including the one I had in), that my nose is gauged probably about 1-2 sizes bigger (16-18?) than the normal size. I really would like to wear the new ones I got, but I'm afraid that wearing them will make the hole close up so I can't wear the old one. but on the other hand, I could always attempt to gauge it again, and Ive also heard that if it's healed pretty well, then it wont close up as quickly/as much...any advice?

hiding the fact is understandably impossible. however to a 3 year old, certain things are easier explained, like a band aide for a boo boo. my main concern was that i'll be in a pool. will a band aide likely keep my nose piercing safe? i plan on washing it right after i get out with antibacterial soap and rinsing with sea salt water.

Emily, noses tend to heal and close up on their own without much help. However, if your nose was pierced with sterling silver that can sometimes leave a permanent discoloration which nothing can remove.

relache profile image

relache  says:

Nick, how do you think having a band-aid stuck to your nose is going to hide something? You can try it if you want, but don't be surprised by how many people ask if you have a new nose piercing.

Emily  says:

I've had my nose pierced for about 6 months now. About 2 months into the piercing I got a small bump that filled with fluid and my piercer lanced it for me. About a week ago I had a small bump start to form so I went to a different piercer. She said that my nose was pierced with sterling silver and changed it to a titanium stud. After she changed it, I decided to take it out for personal reasons and let the hole close up.

Does anyone have recommendations as to how I should help my nose heal and close up? I've heard vitamin E helps. Is that correct? Thanks!

Nick  says:

I just got my nose pierced about 5 days ago. Its healing quite nicely; minimal redness and soreness with barely any scabbing. I work with kids as a swim instructor. Seeing how there is no way to replace my jewelry with something more appropriate, would there be any way to protect it while in the pool also hiding the gaud of the "big silver thing in Mr. Nick's nose"? A band aide?

Fareeza, having a cold with a new nose piercing is a toughie. Try to be as gentle as you can with the piercing with all that blowing. You may want to clean the inside side of it more frequently while you are sick, and watch out for the piercing becoming chapped as that can really make it sore.

Jamie, all I can really say is that some of my ear piercings are still quite tender to change even though they are over 10 years old. Make sure the metal you wear is good quality, as poor jewelry can cause long-term irritation and keep taking care of it as if it was new until it settles down.

Hello I just got my nose pierced exactly a week ago! I love it I have had no problems with it, or cleaning it. The place I went to was very clean, and very professional. I read a lot of aftercare sites and even yours. I seem to be on point with all that. The one thing my piercer did make very clear to me, was to not pull, tug, or play with the jewelry,or NOT TO CHANGE THE JEWELRY FOR 6 WEEKS. I am happy with my jewelry selection it is a screw, and I have had no problems with it. My question though is; 3 times now when removing my sunglasses pulling them straight out rather then straigght up I have snagged the stud (the stud never came out just jerked it a little). Hurts like a **** of course makes me tear up because it is only a week old. My fear is that I have damaged the piercing.. I have noticed when cleaning it with a cotton ball or Q-tip that right in front of the piercing (from the hole to the tip/nostral of my nose) it is really bruised and is getting hard like under the skin. If I flare my nostrals it feels brusied along the side of my nostral as well. When I slide the Q-tip gently over that area I get like a burning sensation all the way to the piercing and it feels like it is burning in the piercing... There is no swelling, no bumps, and no redness, no secretions.. Is this just part of the healing? Or have I damaged it by accidently snagging it? Also I your site if terrific amd given me a lot of knowledge kudos to you!!

Msoma, I'm concerned that people are forcing you to get pierced when you don't want to. In the USA, forcing a body piercing on someone is illegal. In Western culture, astrology has nothing to do with any sort of body piercing.

relache profile image

Sara, it's a brand new piercing, which is to say, a fresh wound. New piercings can bleed, but most tend to do so because the jewelry is being jerked around too much. You should not have to wear a band-aid to keep the jewelry in place, this is probably adding to the problem. Go to a reputable piercing shop and have them switch your jewelry to something that fits properly.

Toni, sadly those overly-tight backings are another reason that ear piercing guns should never be used on noses. There's no trick to removing them. It's just going to have to be muscled off.

Melina, it could be either reason that made it so you can't get the jewelry back in, but since it's not my nose, I would have no way of telling which.

hi I'm a regular swimmer (3 times a week) and I want to get my nose pierced again. Whats the best option stud or ring? I had my nose pierced before and kept getting keloids on it so had to take it out. Is there anyway of preventing this happening again?

I have a question...my daughter got her nose pierced two weeks ago with a gun....i dont want to hear about how you should never do that...its done already...my question to you is , how does she get it out? is there a trick to getting the back piece thats inside her nose out? i would really appreciate any help you can give us with this.. its not infected at all, no redness, no swelling, she just wants to put a new ring in it...

my nose ring was developing some sort of gunk near the jewel so i took it out to clean it. i have had it pierced since July 7th. After i removed the gunk, it wouldn't go back in the hole. could it have closed on the inside in the short amount of time it was out? or can i just not find the hole. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whitney, if you don't mind the risk of infection you can do whatever you want.

I got my nose pierced a week ago, is it safe to swim in the lake if I clean it immediately after?

Amanda, I have no idea how sensitive your nose may or may not be, or how it's going to feel to you as it starts to heal.

hi i've been thinking about getting my nose pierced. There is only a week left untill school starts again. It's Tuesday and my dad said he would take me on friday to get it pierced. My question is: would it be to close to when school starts that it would be bothering me in class?

or do I have to get it sooner?

Alejandra, if the jewelry fits too tightly and you're developing a keloid due to the friction, it might not be able to go away. Go back to your piercer and have them check the fit. And then you'll just have to judge for yourself how much effort you want to put into trying to heal it. I can't say how your nose is going to heal or respond.

Jasmine, my thoughts on how soon to change jewelry, what materials are appropriate and what can cause reactions are all written in the Hub content. You just have to read it.

I got my nose peirced about 7 weeks ago. I have not had any problems at all. I went back into the place i originally got the peircing and had it changed.(they did it for me) and it went fine, but i was wondering how long i should wait to change to a small guage?? and what are the chances of my nose changing colors if it's sterling silver. note: My skin doesn't change colors with sterling silver necklaces just cheap rings (such as mood rings). Also is it risky to change out my nose stud to a clear retainer after just 7 weeks?? (the retainer would just be temporary for about a day and then i would change it again morning and night. it's for a business activity!

Morgan, nylon/acrylic isn't suitable for healing nose piercings as 1) the material can stick to the healing surface and 2) it can cause irritation due to interaction with body fluids. A nose ring is the best replacement as they can't fall out.

I got my nose pierced 4 days ago, the piercer put a straight stud in. This morning the stud fell out in the shower and into the drain, the only thing i could find to put in the piercing is my roomates retainers that are the same exact size as my original nose piercing iknow it was really soon to have to put a new piercing in, but it went in just fine and i didn't have to force it, but i'm unsure if this is gonna ruin my nose piercing and what to do next.

Ruby,

1) You can't weari a retainer if your nose isn't healed fully, and yours isn't yet. Plus, it really could shut on you if you change it this soon.

2) If you think a retainer can't be seen, you're deluding yourself. They are totally visible. If you can't have a pierced nose at school, get prepared to be ordered to take out and abandon your nose piercing.

3) You just curl the curled part through and then it pops down.

Kendra, standard nose rings are 18g. Thinner and you risk having something that can cut through the nose tissue.

Luna, I can't possibly predict what your chances of an infection are. BTW, I only hear from all the people who think they are having a problem and never from people who are healing just fine.

Pix, how the heck did a thing in your nose wind up being swallowed? If you feel you need to go to a doctor, by all means go.

Dear Relache,

I've wanted a nose piercing for two years now, and my mom took the longest time to consider it! She said that I had to convince her with facts, details, and a lot of effort on my part. I read your page and some others, and I have one question. 'What is the risk of infection?'

Take into account that:

I have 7 piercings on my ears, all open save one cartilage. It only got infected because I went swimming in a pond. Foolish.

I clean myself regularly, and I wash my face three times a day.

My room is clean and I wash my hands a lot.

I take care of my piercings, and I take precautions whenever I can.

I travel: I go to many countries (usually only developing countries in the summer for about 3 weeks. We bring plenty of antiseptic and antibiotics. I got a piercing in Greece at an antique/icon/piercing store and it didn't get infected.)

I scar, but only on my legs and arms.

I don't have acne but I have KP but not on my nose.

Should I still get a piercing? Would it be safe? I know exactly what I need, and I am careful about where I get piercings.

Thank you!

Okay, I know this is going to sound incredibly stupid, but I think I may have swallowed my nose corkscrew thingy in my sleep. It's not the first time one has fallen out in my sleep.. I've already replaced it with another, but my question is due to its odd, pointy-ish shape, should /i go to the doctor/emergency room? I'd rather not if at all possible, but if I have to, I will. Thanks for your help & consideration.

Mimi, with a nose ring, there shouldn't be any need for taping over the piercing, as rings hook to themselves and can't fall out.

Hi, I have had my nose piercing for almost 5 months now. the guy who did it told me i had a 18 g piercing if I want to get a 20 g ring is it true that if i put a band aid on my nose with the smaller ring in overnight that my nose will automatically adjust to the smaller size? Just trying to make sure before I buy the ring ;0)

Chelsea, my best answer is a big, uncertain "it might" or "it could."
