Comic Tutorial : Expression 101 (Mouth!)
72Expression, one of the most vital aspect in drawing comics! no matter how ugly your drawing is, for example as ugly as mine! you going to need expressions to show the reader what actually the character in your comic trying to tell.
There’s wise man saying, “Expression tells more than a thousand words..” (don’t mind it.. I’m just Rambling, been out of Java for a couple of days now!)
Step 1
Anyhow, let’s get started boys and gals! we going to need some interactivity here.. let me introduce you with, Mr. Viktim! he’s going to help us in this tutorial! so please, be kindly and just right click, save-as on Mr.Viktim’s mug!
Done it? allrighty, let’s continue. here i assume you boys and gals understand how to CUTCROPCOPYPASTE using image editors, but if you’re and oldskool comic artist, just save the image and print out on a blank paper! easy peasy lemon squeezey!
Now, i want you to do the same with these basic sets of mouth expressions. Take a good look at it first, then same deal, right click, save-as on the picture.
Step 2
Cheers! now you have both sets in your puter! now i want you to cut them weird mouth into a couple of single pieces (you can remove the texts.. they annoying!), Done it? Good!
Now try merging it one by one with Mr. Viktim’s mug and see what happened! VOILA! the ol’ dull mouthless Viktim now able to express what’s in his mind using each mouth picture.
Finale
So far, what im trying to explain is, there’s so many different looks of mouth expression that can enrich your character with more ways to express him/her/itself. So start studying different mouth curves now! grab you Granma’s big ol’ mirror from the attic and start moving your mouth like crazy, and draw it in your own style!
Practice makes perfect! (that’s what I’m tying to tell myself for these couple of years making sketches)
I hope this so-called “Tutorial” helps you in your journey through the world of comic making! until later, I wish you all boys and gals a big best of luck!
