General Information and How To Contact

This information was compiled in July 2009.

TAX Default Auction

The county conducts some auctions online. Security deposits required (may vary) and there is a $15 processing fee. It must be in the hands of Modoc County before you can bid

Modoc County is located in California's most northeast corner. It is bordered on the north by Oregon and on the east by Nevada.

70% of the county land is owned by the Federal Government, primarily in the form of National Forest land. Only 29% of the county's land is in private ownership.

Alturas is the county seat and has a population of 2,795. The overall population of the entire county is 9,197 according to the 2007 census. This is a really beautiful part of California.

And, best of all it could just prove being the deal of a lifetime. I glanced through some recent offerings and there was acreage. Minimum bids start cheap (I saw start bids at $400-600), and there have been "no reserve" auctions.

This could possibly be a good way to make money by buying and reselling. Another option in the make money category would be to improve the property and then resell it at a later date when values get higher. Regardless of whether you keep the property or sell it, this is certainly a money making opportunity and/or a quiet place to enjoy.

Finally, your own space...
