Unique Search Engine Optimization - (SEO) Common Myths
78How Backlinks Damage SEO
When it comes to backlinks and search engine optimization there are several things you need to know and understand. Since you already know that you need backlinks, I'll move on to what you need to understand about a backlink.
I was on the Internet before the word "blog" came along. I was on the Internet long before they coined the term "SEO." I was there for the birth of Adsense, and before Google even existed there was "Bob." I mentioned this because I have been around a long time and I have watched the way most Internet users accumulate knowledge.
When it comes to building knowledge about search engine optimization, most people are stuck at the level of the person, or persons, they follow. So when the ones they follow tell them that they need to get all the backlinks they can, these faithful followers go out and beg, borrow and steal in an effort to get all the one way inlinks they can.
They go to every blog and post a text link to their website. They spend untold hours posting links in all the social media sites. They write articles containing text links and backlinks to their websites and then blast them to every article publishing site they can find.
What you have just accomplished by following the advice of all these seo experts is you have thrown "Unique" out the window, and you have joined the rank of the millions of "common." What does common mean to Google" It means "Duplicate." You are nothing but a carbon copy of the seo sites you follow.
This is the reason these same seo companies tell you that you should never try to optimize for the top keywords in top level markets. They have all tried it and failed, why? Because their seo techniques will only produce common results! Google will never allow the "common" a place among the "Unique."
Not only will this backlink information help your google search engine ranking, it will cut your work load way down. Keep in mind that after a website has reached the top, and google has smothered them in love, many of the common seo rules no longer apply. I will expand on this in another Hub. This information only applies to those who are just beginning to break away from the common and beginning their journey to unique.
I suppose you can work yourself to death and eventually get to the top of the common pile, but when you get there, you will still be "common."

Common SEO Mistakes With Backlinks, or Inlinks
When most optimizers do their search engine optimization, one of the first things they do is check out the websites of their competition. One thing they look at is the number of backlinks to the competitors site. They then set out on a mission to get more backlinks for their website than the competition has.
Most of you are already aware of the fact that when it comes to links coming in to your website, quality means much more than quantity, but what you may not be aware of is how the click through rate of these links affect how Google looks at your website.
Google tracks not only the number of backlinks to your website, they also track the keywords in the text of these links. Google then compares how often the link is viewed verses the percentage of times the link is actually clicked.
If you have backlinks all over the Internet that are often viewed but rarely clicked, this tells Google that your website is not popular for the keywords you have chosen in your text links.
An example of this in action is an article I wrote in response to a competitor who released an article to all the article publishers. He did a wonderful job, in a short time he had generated thousands of inlinks from this article.
I responded by submitting my article to only the top two publishers. The click through rate on my text link was over 60%. The other guys CTR never topped 4%. As a direct result of this my site and several sites linked to it moved up several spots in Google search etc. The competitors site was pushed way back to page 8.
The moral of this story is clear, be real careful when it comes to where you place your backlinks. The same scenario is true with social sites, there are only about three of these sites that links should be placed on, any more than this and you may be causing yourself more harm than you realize. I don't care if your backlink is found on a pagerank 10 website, if it is not being regularly clicked on, it is not considered a quality backlink by google.

Hey Will, I'll write that Hub about domain names and seo as soon as I can. I will tell you that the domain name should contain something in it that pertains to the industry the site is in. I will also tell you that I have used domain names that were nothing but jumbled number and letter combination and placed better in organic search than the sites that contained the keyword in the domain name.
It is nice to read someone who understands SEO as you do. I will stay tuned.
Hello earnestshub, we are all unique in our own way, if we apply ourselves, we can not spend dozens of years working on the Internet and come away empty handed.

This is some interesting stuff! Logical as well. I only write at hub pages just now, hubby is working on a website for affiliating and a correlating blog and being a perfectionist I am getting loads of time to focus on hub pages and learn the skills that will help the site when the build is done. I must keep in mind what you say when my job of marketing the site kicks in :). I have noticed that with my hubs here the back linking does not always do what I expect! With a few hubs I was able to find and comment on relating blogs and the results have been exciting, even was asked to write content for one of the blogs! Other hubs have been harder to find relevant places to back link and I just have to be patient or wind up being spammy (don't see any good coming from that). I have found sites back linking unexpected hubs in ways that I could not have gotten if I tried, one hub has the picture I used on it on another website and it links right to my article. I don't see that I could have made that happen, the web master had to decide it was relevant him or herself. I am starting to think that the key is to just be patient and try to focus on remembering to tweak summary text, have rich content and relevant tags. Sorry this got long winded but your hubs have juiced up my grey matter! :D
Hello Kirsten,
You are doing the right things. All this running around people do trying to drive traffic to their site is called self seo. Google and others call it self love. As soon as the new google caffeine goes live just after the holidays many of these self love search engine optimizers are going to fall off of googles radar.
I have tested google caffeine and I have been warning people about the seo techniques they use. I will tell you something about patience, I am not mentioning this to brag, just to prove my point. While google was testing their new caffeine, 14 of my websites went from an average of 30 to 40 hits a day to an average of 300 to 400 hits a day. I did not go out and attempt to drive traffic to any of those sites, all I did was wrote unique content and let them go.
You said it right, after the unique and great content is there, patience is a virtue.
I always tell people that, yes, there are a few things you need to do to get yourself noticed and the ball rolling, but after this you need to relax and allow others to freely show their love to you. This is what Google is looking for, they are not looking for links all over the internet that were all placed by someone with the same IP. Oh, woops, I just let a secret out on one way google tracks self love seo. It really isn't a secret, it is just something few think about when they go out and self promote.
I just can not understand how so many people fall for the idea that just because the top sites in organic search have thousands of backlinks, this is why their site rates so well. This is backwards thinking that is promoted by all these seo companies out there. The real truth is that people love these sites that rank well in organic search, and to show their love they give them a backlink. When google begins to see backlinks being submitted by different IPs they start to show their love for the site also by moving them up in position.
Google is not showing their love because of something the site owner is doing (LINKS LINKS LINKS) they are just responding to the love others are giving the site.
Bob
What you say in this hub and on the comments are so logical and easy to understand, even if you don't really want to be patient :). I loved reading your insightful advice on the best approach to search engine optimization, understanding what these search engines want makes using the right seo strategies easier!
I am glad that while at first I did spend hours looking for places to back link because thats what everyone says to do, I did try to have some net-manners. I could not quite bring myself to feeling a back link might be spammy. I could not see the point in posting a comparison hub about 2 mp3 players on any site that was not about those particular mp3 players, a climbing blog would be insane really. I actually figured it might not do well cause I couldn't find good places to back link, it's still quite new and the traffic is going up and so is its hub score! I hope that by being patient it will start drawing the sort of traffic that is in a buying mood lol! The best thing is, now you have a new fan! :D
Hello Kirsten,
I'm speaking from my own experience, the masses just don't get it, when they optimize their content for the purpose of getting a higher rank, and when they go out and self promote themselves, not only does Google see right through it, Internet users do too. This form of advertising and marketing turns people off.
Any good seo or webmaster will tell you that the only clean and good way to get backlinks is to simply focus your efforts on unique, quality content. When you do this you have created what we call "Link Bait." Link bait is created by using quality content, it can be a video, text, images etc. When a webmaster sees this type of unique and quality content they are more than happy to link to the site.

My SEO Journey
A little more about how and why I studied Search Engine Optimization so intensely.
Years ago I had the opportunity to work beside one of my brothers, side by side, him on his computer and me on mine. At the time I was broke, but he was pretty well off. We both had several websites on the Internet and we were working on driving traffic to our sites.
As time went on I noticed that he was spending tons of money on Google AdWords and several other Pay Per Click (PPC) ads as part of his Search Engine Marketing. I didn't have the convenience of extra money so all of my traffic had to come from Organic Search, etc. or not at all. I remember at the time how he would brag about how much traffic he was getting to his sites, but I was not at all impressed with the fact that he had to pay to get visitors.
It was at that time that I swore to myself that I would never pay Google or anyone else for traffic. Don't get me wrong, as long as you are a legitimate business that can write off your marketing costs, and you have the money to spend, this is not a bad way to go at all. But there are many starting out that do not have this luxury of endless cash to spend on sem.
Well, after much study and trial and error, I was driving more traffic to my websites than my brother was to his, and all my traffic was free. And folks, I get so much traffic now that it does not even concern me about giving information away, if I can help someone else just a little, I'm going to do it.
The biggest spike in my google organic searh did not come until I finally learned to back off of self promotion so much, or what I like to call self love. When I learned to let the growth come from the love of others, the rise in google organic search placement was out of this world.

Right again Bob, quality backlinks beat out quantity every time. Everyone thinks the top sites in google are there because of the amount of inlinks, no, they got there because of the quality of the content and quality of their inlinks. You are very right also about the average person not getting away with some of the same things others do who already have the love from google. Once a site has the love of google the junk backlinks do not hurt them, but it will others that are not as loved.
If you would please write an article about the relevance of your keywords being in the domain name, I think all these seo guys are mistaken about this also.
