Optimizing Adsense in Hubpages

When you build your hub you lay the basis for Google Adsense to display the best fitting ads they can. You must understand one thing first:

Google Adsense tries to spend the least amount of dollars displaying ads to earn the highest possible amount of dollars from the advertisers.

Adsense is a highly succesful advertising program, and it's very profitable for Google, for people like you and me on hubpages and elsewhere who display their ads - and for the advertisers who pay for their ads.

Why is it so profitable? Because Google has perfected the art of displaying relevant ads.

There are two ways you can optimize for Adsense:

  1. By the placement and color scheme of the Adsense Ad units
  2. By making sure the Adsense Bot knows what the page is all about

The placement and color scheme: you don't have much options to influence, that is pretty much a given, as the hubpage editors decide about this and the ad units are placed without us having influence on their looks and position. But you can assume that there are knowledgeable people at work who test and optimize (hopefully) all the time to see if a small change can get still a slightly higher click through rate.

Keeping a hub on topic is really where you can make a difference to assure that the ads are as much on taget as possible, so that visitors see an interest in what Adsense presents them:

Google Adsense offers a great way to monetize your hub!

What you can do to make Google's job easier

Optimizing the page for Adsense means one thing for you:

Keep your hub foucused on one theme!

So if you are talking about cars, don't talk also about SUV's, buses, trucks and maybe even motocycles. If you get broad in one hub, it becomes really difficult for the Google Adsense bot to figure out what exactly your page is about. He has now the problem to decide if he should display an ad about cars, SUV's, buses, trucks or motorcycles..... ???

So make his job easy and concentrate on one topic per hub!

Optimze your tags for the Google Adsense bot

Tags are important!

Use relevant tags only when you add them, the Google Adsense bot will read them and takes a first clue from them. To stay with the cars example above:

You may add car, cars, chrysler, ford, bmw, toyota, mercedes, etc. to your tags, but don't add mack (truck brand) or kawasaki (motocycle brand) to the tags list.

The great thing is, that by optimizing for the Adsense bot, you also optimize for relevant tags so that the right people who are looking for exactly what's on the hubpage will easily find your hub.

Use relevant Capsule Subtitles to help Google Adsense

The subtitles for your capsules are important too. Try to include the main keyword for the topic of the hub into most of your subtitles.

Make them sound normal and attractive, don't forget, you're building these pages for people, not for the Google Adsense bot.

A good title for a car hub woudl be 'Cars that cost less' or 'Cars that use less gas' etc. Rather than subtitles like 'Save at the dealers' - 'Consume less gas with these:'

Write good copy - The Adsense bot reads it too!

Finally write good copy. This means write naturally about the topic you chose, don't try to stuff the text with the keyword. Thsi makes it annyoing for humans and they'll leave quickly, and it doesn't really help for Google Adsense, and definitely not for Google the Search engine...

You may be hoping to actually also getting a good rating in the search engines with your page, so - I repeat myself, because it's so important - write good copy for humans.

By doing so and by providing an interesting article, you will be naturally doing something that the SEO experts call Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). Simply put, the search engine algorythms try to determine if they are looking at a page that has valauble content or just a bunch of keywsords and not much valuable information for humans.

They do this in such a way, that they try to figure out if there is a natural distribution of words as they occure when we write or talk. For the keyword 'car', the neighbouring expressions one woudl normally expect to occur also in a text are:

  • auto
  • business
  • car dealer
  • car audio
  • car rental
  • classic car
  • rental car
  • service
  • travel
  • used car
  • vehicle

Sure, not all of these words are expected, but these are the words a search engine would expect also in a good quality text.

Don't worry too much about LSI, if you write naturally, these words crop up all by themselves and you don't need to pay attention to them. LSI is there to make sure, keyword stuffers do not get to the top positions in SE listings.

JoAnn you're welcome. Keeping a hub focused is a good idea, not just for Adsense, but it will generally have more success if you treat one subject in depth, rather than going very broad and shallow.

I just made a post in another helpful hub and was wondering how I can position Google Adsense ads on the right side of my hub, but after reading your article, I realize I can't control where my ads show up in HubPages as I do with my own website. Thanks for the tips!

Getting Traffic to Feed the Ads

OK, you now have a nice page and Google automatically starts to put ads on it.

Google Adsense is a commercial program and they have cost for

  1. sending you the Google Adbot to find out about your content
  2. sending you ads

They will send you good ads that pay well if you have many clicks, they will send you ads that are less profitable if the click through rate is lower, and they will send you public service stuff, if after a long time of sending you ads nobody ever clicks your Google Adsense ads.

What does that mean for you?

You need to send targeted traffic to your hub, people who are really interested in the subject and whon ,when thes see ads for your subject are likely to click on them.

To get traffic flowing, blog about your hub, tell everybody you know hwo might be interested in the subject about your hub, and submit your hub to other web 2.0 sites and link back in!
