Mold infestation on concrete walls

Do you have mold problems in your concrete walls? You are not alone; this is a common, if not a regular problem for a lot of home owners. And you cannot afford to take the ostrich approach as black molds can directly affect your health. Especially if you have breathing problems and or similar ailments, molds (especially black molds) can be a great threat to your health and living.

A lot of people say that they have tried a lot to remove the molds forever but they come back as soon as they are removed. Now, here people make a great mistake. Molds do not come back all on their own. They need moisture to live and grow. Thus when you see black molds growing somewhere in your home that means the area is damp and moist.

Most of the people, who say that they have tried every possible way to remove molds forever, did not think about the moisture problems in the adjacent area. To remove mold forever, you must make sure that the area is dry and air can easily flow inside. This is the primary condition to kill mold forever.

At this point some people would say that their concrete foundations have moisture protectors. However, we often find that, these barriers are not properly installed or they are too damaged to protect the room from black molds. In this situation you do not have any other option but re installing the moisture barrier for a lasting solution.

In some areas like Arizona or South Carolina moisture is not a big problem; hence residents do not normally install moisture barriers into concrete foundations. However, it is always recommended to use moisture barrier to protect the concrete wall against molds when there are heavy rainfalls for few days.

Moisture barriers are fine. But how do you remove the existing molds from the concrete walls?

If you have kids or elderly people at home, you must be extra cautious while removing molds from a wall. The same rule applies when you have someone ill at home especially with breathing ailment. This is a ‘must’ because while cleaning mold, spores may fly in the air and cause serious problems to the people.

Before cleaning the room, close all the doors and windows that open inside the house. At the same time keep at least one window open to exhaust the polluted air from inside. If you do not have an exhaust fan, try using table fan. You may also try to remove as many furniture or cloths as possible so that mold spores do not stick to them.

Now protect yourself with all the protective gears like full sleeve shirts, gloves, mask, eyewear etc. Apart from these protective gears, you would also need some other things like brush, heavy plastic bag, mold cleaners (I would recommend using some organic mold killers as they are not harmful at all.), duster, vacuum cleaner, spray bottle and water.

Now, when you are fully protected, spray some water on the mold. This will stop the mold spores from become airborne (spores are very dry and fragile and becomes airborne very fast). Now properly clean the mold with the organic cleaner. After cleaning the molds, dry out the place and the adjacent area. Collect all molds into the plastic bag and throw it far away from your home. Now use a vacuum cleaner to clean the room properly. That’s it – you are done with your molds.

However, make sure that you have also removed the cause of mold’s growth in the wall. If you cannot solve this basic problem, molds would grow again and you will have to start the same process again.
