So, you have decided that it’s time to shop organic, but you are a little confused by all of information that’s out there, well lets set about clearing up the clutter and de-bunking some of the most common organic food myths. Myth 1: Organic is a marketing term and there are no standards for what is organic and what is not. Truth behind the myth: For food or farm to get the right to use the word “organic” on their label they must pass an inspection by the US Dept of Agriculture (link), at least in the United States. Other nations vary, but most have some process for monitoring. Myth 2: Organic foods will have a shorter shelf life than what is in my house now. Truth behind the myth: This one stems from the fact that organic produce is not treated with pesticides, which can result in some spotting. But pesticides do nothing to help with shelf life of the food. If you store your fruits and veggies properly they will last. Myth 3: My organic fruit will be spotty, mealy and rotten. Truth behind the myth: While you may notice some small spots on the fruit, you should not find any rotting on your fruit. This is much like any of the time you spent buying fruit, freshness is the key. Myth 4: It is hard work finding organic foods, I don’t have the kind of time. Truth behind the myth: Organic foods, while once hard to find, are popping up all over the place. Once resigned to farmers market and shoppers at whole foods, organic foods are popping up at Shoprite, Foodtown, and Stop and shop’s all over the world. You may have to read the labels, but its there. So, now that you know the truth about organic food nothing will stop you from eating healthier.
