When it comes to lighting the outside of your home there a few things every home owner should know. Outside lighting is a very important step that many home owners forget about or just don't pay much attention to. Hopefully you're not one of them because properly placed residential outside lighting can bring out the exterior beauty of your home. And the best thing is that most outside light fixtures are easy to install and when you choose the right type of lights for your situation, really highlight the aspects of your home that you want to showcase. I want to point out some of the common mistakes people make when choosing outside lights for home.

Outside Lighting Mistakes

1. They don't take advantage of outside lighting.

Outside lights can be a great way to show off the exterior of your home and the surrounding area of your terrace or garden and it is a big mistake to just dismiss them or not utilize outside lighting properly. It is a growing field and is in-fact one of the most requested services that landscaping companies perform. If you see a house that is taking advantage of outdoor lighting, then you'll understand how something a simple as a few properly placed lights can really bring the house and any surrounding vegetation to life.

1. They think you have to be an expert to install outside light fixtures.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to put off installing outside lights because they think it takes an expert to put them in. Nothing could be further from the truth and with outside light types like LED and solar, you don't even need to do any wiring. You just pick a spot and secure them to it. Even with the wired low voltage outside lights you can still just use the packaged instructions.

1. They don't understand the different types of outside lighting and don't utilize them.

Admittedly, outside lighting can be confusing when you don't know much about it with all the different brands and types to choose from. But it doesn't have to be. Outside lights can be broken down into three specific types: LED, Solar, and Low Voltage. LED and solar outside lights are powered by the sun and require direct sunlight so they have to be placed where they do receive direct sun. They are also wireless so installation of solar and LED outside lights are a breeze. Low voltage outside lights are a little different, they run on the power from your home and have to be wired in. They also have to be weather proofed but outside low voltage lights are still not that difficult to install. Low voltage lights are perfect for low direct sunlight areas of your yard.
