What is Social Phobia
Social Phobia is a mental condition wherein a person consistently feels an intense fear of being judged by other people; or being embarrassed in front of them. Although such feelings are normal; however, as soon as they interfere with doing the normal functions and affects the quality of life, then it is diagnosed as social phobia. This mental condition should be given proper medical attention; if left untreated, it may develop into social anxiety disorder which is a severe mental health problem.
Most people suffering from social phobia know that their feelings are no longer normal; but, somehow they have no control over them. Examples of these abnormal feelings are: they can’t normally eat with other people for fear of being embarrassed on the way they eat, or the kind of food they eat; they can’t talk in front of the class or group for fear of being humiilated for the way they speak or comitting mistakes on their English grammars; and they avoid any social gatherings because they fear being judged for the way they look or dressed up.

Treatment Options for Social Phobia
Social Phobia generally occurs at the start of adolescence at 13 years old. When symptoms mentioned above are observed, it is advisable to consult your physician so that proper medication may be administered as needed. Usually, doctors will do some examination to determine if other physical problem is causing the occurrence of such symptoms. If results are negative, then the concerned person may be referred to a mental health specialist. The attending doctor may prescribe medication for social phobia. Medicines given are usually anti-depressants, ant-anxiety medicines, and beta-blockers.
Research shows that when chemicals in the brain are beyond their normal level, they may cause social phobia; and medicines can aid in maintaining the level of these chemicals within their normal range. Consequently, medicines can help people with social phobia feel less anxious and less fearful.
In combination with medicines, psychotherapy may be administered to help the patient. This is very helpful for long term treatment and to completely overcome social phobia. The most common psychotherapy used for social phobia is to encourage the affected person to join support groups and communicate wih group members. This group can be your family, friends and relatives. Group sharings on things and problems in life are encourage in order to improve communication level with other people.
Other methods used are relaxation techniques and exercises, encourage the person to do his hobbies and take vacation. Recently, various natural methods of treatment were also introduced which is widely accepted by many people and highly recommended by physicians.
