Nastassja Kinski by Richard Avedon (Vogue, 1981)
Nastassja Kinski by Richard Avedon (Vogue, 1981)

I cannot sleep again last night. And like some nights when my thoughts refuse to be pacified, I turned to Pablo Neruda and his poetry.

Neruda was a Chilean poet whose work gravitated towards the symbolist movement and later, leaned closer to surrealism. But whatever label one might feel compelled to use in describing his work, it is undeniable that a single theme threads through the fabric that was his words: his own private passions. From politics, to eroticism, to love, to simple odes to beauty, Neruda's verses always ignite fire or bring on the rain, calm the soul or set it free to soar.

But while Neruda's poetry is generally regarded as palatable to say at the very least, the same cannot be said of nude photography for it is one art form that, well, straddles the fine line that divides art and wannabe art - The Real McCoy from the Talented Mr Ripley. But I digress. This is not about what makes nude photography an art form (truth be told, I'm not in any way an expert on the subject). But what this is about are a poem by Neruda and some images that I think provide an interesting accompaniment to the words he wove and pieced together in that poem. Although I have been honest in saying that I wouldn't know the first law of the land as far as nude photography is concerned, I think the names of the photographers/artists who conjured the images below more than validate their work's artistic merits.

Lastly, I dedicate this sort-of-diptych to franciaonline who is willing to share her pillow with Neruda and me.

A word of caution: You read the title and I'm sure you have at least an incling that the images below might not conform to the dicta of taste that you subscribe to.

Ode to a Naked Beauty

.

.

With chaste heart, and pure

eyes

I celebrate you, my beauty,

restraining my blood

so that the line

surges and follows

your contour,

and you bed yourself in my verse,

as in woodland, or wave-spume:

earth's perfume,

sea's music.

Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson by Annie Leibovitz (Vanity Fair, Mar 2006)
Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson by Annie Leibovitz (Vanity Fair, Mar 2006)

.

.

Nakedly beautiful,

whether it is your feet, arching

at a primal touch

of sound or breeze,

or your ears,

tiny spiral shells

from the splendour of America's oceans.

Your breasts also,

of equal fullness, overflowing

with the living light

and, yes,

winged

your eyelids of silken corn

that disclose

or enclose

the deep twin landscapes of your eyes.

"Stephanie, Cindy, Christy, Tatjana, Naomi, Hollywood, 1989" by Herb Ritts
"Stephanie, Cindy, Christy, Tatjana, Naomi, Hollywood, 1989" by Herb Ritts

.

.

The line of your back

separating you

falls away into paler regions

then surges

to the smooth hemispheres

of an apple,

and goes splitting

your loveliness

into two pillars

of burnt gold, pure alabaster,

to be lost in the twin clusters of your feet,

from which, once more, lifts and takes fire

the double tree of your symmetry:

flower of fire, open circle of candles,

swollen fruit raised

over the meeting of earth and ocean.

Kate Moss by Irving Penn (1996)

.

.

Your body - from what substances

agate, quartz, ears of wheat,

did it flow, was it gathered,

rising like bread

in the warmth,

and signalling hills

silvered,

valleys of a single petal, sweetnesses

of velvet depth,

until the pure, fine, form of woman

thickened

and rested there?

It is not so much light that falls

over the world

extended by your body

its suffocating snow,

as brightness, pouring itself out of you,

as if you were

burning inside.

I don't know why Pablo Neruda annoys me. He just does. The pictures were gorgeous (well--all except for Sylvester, below). Your writing here is witty and sharp.

Cris what a delicious way to start my day.  I think you matched the photography and poems wonderfully.  Neruda has a new fan, and I am inspired.  I especially loved this description of eyes,

"winged

your eyelids of silken corn

that disclose

or enclose

the deep twin landscapes of your eyes."

p.s. I love your new avatar, you are one naughty angel.

Also preety cool that you're holding that 100 score.  Good for you!  Now, don't be gettin' all full of yourself and shit ...

PS: The pink frames-effect is pretty cool, too. How'd you do that?

I think the pictures would flow with anything! The words were almost incidental! LOL

Teresa

Would you put Neruda in the same league as Cliff Richard? LOL Okay Sly is gone. You can look now! :D

Thanks for dropping by. OKay, that's two votes against Sly. He got the boot!

Glad to have made your day start on the right foot. You go writing your ode now!Yeah, my avatar is the antidote to Artisan Walker's goody goody angerl! LOL

Great hub! Neruda is one of the great Latin American poets. I used to practice my Spanish pronunciation and intonation by reading his poems aloud. Years ago I translated his greatest love poem, Poema XX, to English. Great selection of photographs also.

Chris,

you know, I was thinking about that. In fact, I am still reworking it. I have to admit, I am not all about love being cherished and passionate anymore. I am angry with love and I decided to turn those two lovers (whom as you may well know, I spied on in the hub  'Foreplay' http://hubpages.com/hub/foreplay ). And give them a tragic ending! I just cannot come out of the darkness just yet. I wanted to surprise you with it. I just cannot be true to myself if I gave them a happy ending...

Can't say that I 'got' this - the poetry here just didn't turn my pages -"you bed yourself in my verse " - ugh !

"But" I thought, "this is Cris - there is nothing so far that he has written or recommended that I haven't had a completely positive reaction to ....." so I popped over to your friend francionline via the link that you provided and learned more about Neruda. I love the poem to his dog that died ...

I guess that your hub is for people who already know Neruda or people who want to look at naked women. Well, I didn't even know Neruda"s name - now I do and have enjoyed being introduced to him by fanciaonline and shall read more of his work, whether ot not I"ll be a fan remains to be seen.

The photos - well, I'll be willing to bet that Neruda's women had curves and did not have pouty little faces.

My little inner jury is out - and all in all it's a thumbs up for this hub - you've introduced me to a new poet, you've provided me with an opportunity to write more than just a few words which feebly try to express stunned silence at the quality of your own poetry and you introduced me to franciaonline.

Like prasadjain, I didn't find the photos to be 'sexy' in the connotation I would normally use. They are beautiful, and in a way make me sad for how we (especially in the 'states) seem to have lost sight of beauty, trading it in for manufactured glossiness. Sans heavy makeup, airbrushing, and figure-shaping fashions these iconic women look downright ...real. And I love it.

The Neruda does compliment everything nicely as well. Never read much, always meant to. Seems like the kind of thing I'll crave when I'm in the mood for and shun when I'm not. I have a few addictions that are like that. :)

Thanks for this lovely hub!
