Paralamas do sucesso - A tribute to Brazilian Rock
58Paralamas do Sucesso
Paralamas do Sucesso, is brazilian rock band, the band started in the 70s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The band members Herbert and Bi childhood friends in Brasilia, met up in Rio in 1977, where Herbert was in military school and Bi lived. Together with Vital the bands drummer they formed the Paralamas do Sucesso.
They used to practice at Bis grandmother house in Copacabana, and their music was based on funny non-serious issues, they have a song "Vovó Ondina é gente fina" inspired on Bis grandmother Vóvó Ondina, and other titles like: "Pinguins já não os vejo pois não está na estação", "Mandingas de Amor" and "Reis do 49". It was at this time that they chose the name for the group Paralamas do Sucesso.
It was a college group at first, Vital the drummer did not attend 1982 at Universidade Rural do Rio and was substituted by João Barone. They wrote a song honouring their ex-drummer Vital in 1983, "Vital e a sua moto" which was a great sucess in ,Brazil.
In 1984 they made the charts with a few songs from their album "O Passo do Lui" and at the Rock in Rio of that year they hit the stars with their concert. In 1986 they sold more than 700.000 copies of their album "Selvagem", after this success they travelled all the way to Montreaux (1987) for the festival, and hired a new member João Fera.
Their sucess in South America was a reality, they toured in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Venezuela.
Their next two albums "Bora-Bora" (1988) and "Big Bang" (1989) also made the charts with seveal hits from both albums.
In the 90s they published more successful albums:
- 1991: Os Grãos, not as successful as the ones before, but still had 2 songs that made the charts
- 1992: Paralamas, a special collection of the best from the Paralamas do Sucesso. At the time in Brazil their success was far from the point they reached years before, however in Argentina their reputation was still very strong.
- 1994: Severino, this album was taped in England and had a special participation of Brian May (Queen), however it only sold 55.000 copies
- 1995: Vamos Batê Latas, a live collection, besides the fall in record sales they continued to have soldout concerts all over
- 1996: Nove Luas, back to the tops and record sales returning, sold more than 200.000
- 1999: Hey Na Na, also a success album with several songs on the charts
- 1999: Acústico MTV-O album, sold more than 500.000 copies and won the Latin Grammy Award
- 2000: Arquivo II, mas a collection of their best songs between 1991 and 1998
