Famous American President Abraham Lincoln once wrote a letter as a parent, to his son's teacher advising him what to teach to his son. I read this letter and got so impressed with the content of letter that I have to realize the greatness of a person who came from a simple family and one day became the president of America. However, if you read the content of letter you have to do a rethinking that if you are a father or mother, what you will write to the teacher of your son or daughter considering prevailing social and political conditions. Given below is my thinking and I'll be happy if you write a letter to the teacher of your child as written by Abraham Lincoln. That is totally your choice. I'll quote Lincoln's lines here as "Lincoln wrote" than relate its relevance in today's context as "I will write". I would like to mention here although there is some truth behind my expressions but even then it's a hub based on my experiences to reflect some of my feelings of present hostile society.

Lincoln wrote: He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just, all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scroundal there is a hero; that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader.

I'll write:He will have to learn that all men are just, all men are not lier. Also teach him only in movies there is a hero for a scroundal but in reality there are 10 scroundals for one hero. I doubt if there is one dedicated leader for hundred selfish politicians.

Lincoln wrote: Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend.

I'll write: Teach him that for every friend there are lot of enemies.

Lincoln wrote:Teach him that a dollar earned is of far more value than five pounds.

I'll write: Teach him that a dollar earned is forty times more value than a rupee (Appr. Rs.40 /dollar).

Lincoln wrote: Teach him to learn to loose and also to enjoy winning.

I'll write: Teach him to learn to win because nobody respects a looser.

He wrote: Teach him the secret of quit laughter. Teach him the wonder for books, but also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on a green hillside.

Lincoln write: Teach him to be a bookworm and to keep away from other extra-curricular activities.

Lincoln wrote: In school, teach him it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat.

I'll write: In school, teach him it is far more honourable to pass even if with cheating.

Lincoln wrote: Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone is getting on the band wagon.

I'll write: Teach him to copy other's ideas because it's much easier to become popular with cheated ides, concepts etc

Lincoln wrote: Teach him to listen to all men, but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that come through.

I'll write: Teach him to listen to only selected people who are influential, rich andrespected in the society.

Lincoln wrote: Teach him how to laugh when he is sad. Teach him there is no shame in tears.

He wrote: Teach him how to laugh if you have committed a sin or wrong otherwise people will know that you are a culprit.

Lincoln wrote; Teach him to close his ears to a hawling mob; and to stand and fight it if he thinks he's right.

I'll write: Teach him to hear to people otherwise it will be difficult for him to succeed.

Lincoln wrote:Teach him gently, but do not cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.

I'll write: Use all means available with you to teach him learn few tactics that it's not wise nowdays to adhere to one's ideas if these are going to produce more enemies than friends.

Lincoln wrote: Let him have the courage to be impatient, let him have the patience to be brave.

I'll write: Braveness is not of much use in todays context. Its better to be docile and flirting than being brave and honest.

Lincoln wrote: Teach him always to have sublime faith in his creator and faith in himself too, because then he will always have faith in mankind.

I'll write: Teach him to have faith in ministers, members of legislative and parliaments, have faith in castism, regionalism, reliogionism etc. These will be useful for him in real world when he faces the cruel world.

Note: I feel very sad for transforming sentences to make them relevant to current context but this is also hard truth that if a parent writes a letter to a teacher in Lincoln's word he will be making his progeny vulnerable to hostile society.

Who ever is the writer I do not go with him because I strongly feel the opinion expressed here is too cynical.Let the child think positively at least during his childhood.Once he faces the world he may know the both the sides of the coin.Everyone needn't necessrily be bad as you think.let them be pious.

Thanks Laxmi for good comments. I'll be happy if some more people reject my views expressed in this hub.

I believe Abe employed words which are eternal and had in mind values that are immutable while he wrote his son's teacher. To this end therefore, no matter how far we might go technologically, materially and otherwise, there are several facts we must return to as they are underlined in the flaming and flowering words of the fallen hero-LINCOLN-The earlier the better for our decaying world!

life is a fortune for gullible.so we live with fortune seekers. values apart, learning experience, unlike childs pedogogy, adult learning does make a sense. however child need to be said of the earthly truth ,they deal with people like me and my adversaies.the great lincoln said to the teacher the experience he had in fighting the race obssessionist.the child need to know the best and worst of cultivating personal values, fighting the fundamalist, liberal in thinking, and reponsibility to fellowman and as citizen.

Dear Crusador,

It is really worthwhile reading the above assay of reality. It is also true that reality bites, bites very deeply. A thought..... No parent will write any letter to teacher in first go, because the parent wants only accolades from wards nothing less and inspires to acquire every talent good & bad equally. Lincoln is not here, neither is that teacher to whom the letter is written. Truth is time has changed. I for one feel in reflecting the reality you have been very generous. I as a teacher know how the parents feel about the teacher, and also as a parent (frankly) know what I want. Loncolns are gone, vapourised,,,, teachers are also gone,,,,,thinned out in the selfish net partly due to self and partly due to policy makers. Schools are gone.....they have becomes grounds of breeding literate uneducated lots. Situation has become very hopeless. Whom to blame?

good values are everlasting and key to healthy, peaceful and happy life. Look at the staement made by a fellow participant, it is despair to dream good.

I very strongly desire that Lincolns, teachers, schools come back to life like PHOENIX again as early as possible.

thanks, Emiogunwi Endurance, prashanthi, G.M.RAHNUMA, ravindran and Dr. B. J. Koppar for the comments. I agree that people like lincoln are needed more now than the time they lived.

"In school, teach him it is far more honourable to pass even if with cheating." - I find this attitude in a number of Indian students at school. If you make a mistake at school, it is okay. Even if you fail, you would have learnt from those mistakes. It is more important that you learn and apply that in life than in school :| I believe that failing an exam can teach one more than getting an honors grade in a paper.

It is not about silly exams but it is about values, ethos, standards. Those are ever living. Also if trust is lost once then it is lost forever.Taint your reputation once and you are totally done.

Sorry for rambling on and on. I have been seeing too much of the cheating for a while and was pained to see this. :)

The teacher should teach the child to feel good that he held to his values when the whole world was losing theirs.

Socio-economics have changed but not good values. All want good people to win the race. Ultimately the planet and place belongs to people with good values.

I love to see adverse comments to my views on this hub. I know reality is somewhat different but people dream to behave and live like Lincoln though they are well aware that circumstances and surroundings will make it difficult to do so.

Dear Crusador,

I as a teacher in a pretty old College serving for the last 15 years have seen nothing good. Most of them were camouflaged as cows, in reality were power mongers, money launderers, greedy. When the truth was revealed how I felt ashamed for holding these as good valued teacher fellows! Every one (here absolutism holds good!!!!) is an intending politician wanting to make good of time and power they have got for making money. Teaching? forget that. They have been teaching nothing but politics in the name of various subjects like, Commerce, Political Science, Economics, Chemistry, Maths, Physics etc. The major problem is that this attitude has strengthened in percolating to the newer layers of young-not-so-young teachers and will continue to do so. It hurts, now, to have decided to become a teacher in a such environs. Still I respect my gurus who made me to decide to become teacher. Even Lincolns, Teachers, Schools shall have no place in this modern world.
