I've heard people all over say they feel more proud of America and what it stands for since the inauguration, even though I'm sure there are some who disagree with that hopeful viewpoint. For many, though, there's a sense that big changes are coming and that we as American citizens have moved forward because we had the maturity to elect an African American president.

Personally, I think Barack Obama's presidency is more historic because of what's in his head and heart than because of the color of his skin. Although it's definitely a huge paradigm shift and a great move forward that he was elected, I hope that the focus on him being the first African American president will soon recede. And that's not because I shy away from the discussion of racial issues or that I think his status as the first Black president is insignificant; it's because I think at some point we have to move on from discussing race all the time if we want to heal old wounds.

Time will tell, but I hope that Barack Obama's leadership will help people who have been wounded by racial mistreatment to feel comforted and vindicated, making it easier for them to heal. I realize that's a big process and a tall order but I believe in some ways that already began with the tears of joy cried by many on Inauguration Day.
