Pavarotti's Last Performace

Pavarotti was in poor health and was soon to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died in September 2007.

He gave his last live performance, a beautiful and masterful rendition of Nessun Dorma at the opening ceremony of the Turin Winter Olympics in 2006, on a cold winter night.

But although he was live on stage, the whole performance was in fact pre-recorded. This is revealed in a book by the conductor, Leone Magiera.

They decided not to risk a real live performance, in view of Pavarotti's state of health, especially on a cold night. So the whole thing was done in a studio.

Faking It

During the performance Pavarotti mimed the singing, the maestro pretended to conduct an orchestra that pretended to be playing.

No one has caught on until the disclosure by Magiera.

A masterful performance!

Nessum Dorma - The Three Tenors

Pavarotti had sung the same aria as part of The Three Tenors, with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo.

It's interesting to compare the performances.

Yes, Pavarotti will be greatly missed. He set a standard the most tenors only aspire to. Thanks for sharing this last look.

I remember watching that opening ceremony - I'd never have suspected it was a recorded version or that he was ill - he always looked so full of life! Yes, he will be missed - Caruso, Lanza and Pavarotti - tenors who have given me such wonderful listening pleasure!
