A Peek Into Internet Fraud?: Careers-Mirage International Group
93A company calling itself Mirage International Group (mirage Int'l grp) and offering employment through ads on Craigslist is nothing more than an elaborate Internet scheme to get people's personal information, I believe. These “people” have gone a step further to give the illusion they are a legitimate national company complete with website and email addresses to their HR department.

I, having been unemployed for over a year, and looking for a job in a call center I answered the ad. I sent my resume. After a few days of not hearing anything I received this email from Mirage International Group:
Subject: RE: Screening Process

Congratulations Joseph. You have passed the screening process!
After careful evaluation, we at Mirage International Group © feel that with your experience you would be a great addition to our Customer Service team and could be a valuable asset to our company's success as we grow and move towards the future.
The next 3 steps are required by all candidates prior to employment with Mirage International Group ©.
1. Three (3) References
a. Two (2) Professional
b. One (1) Personal
· You must provide contact information and your relations.
2. Salary Request
· Mirage International Group © compensates each Customer Service Representative a rate of $22.00 to $25.00 an hour.
3. Soft Credit Verification
· We have chosen Credit Report © as a 3rd Party Company to process your free report. You will not be required to inquire with all three (3) Major Credit Bureaus, only one (1). This is very important, DO NOT EMAIL THE CREDIT REPORT. We only request that you email us the Report # provided (e.g.: 200907299280000), which is a reference to your report and not the actual FICO score. This will not determine if your application is accepted or denied, nor will it affect your credit score. This step is to validate all information to be correct and accurate. You will need to bring a hard copy of your report on the day of your orientation. Again, do not email the actual credit report. (Note: You may cancel your account immediately as soon as you have received your report.)
· Credit Report Link: http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-3546852-10660901

The first (Caution) flag to come up for me was the offered rate-of-pay. $22-$25 hour is an unheard of rate-of-pay in the industry offering “call center jobs.” Remember the old saying? “If it seems to good to be true, it probably is!”
Here is where I found RED FLAG #1. The request of the “credit report.” Any business, which requests a background credit check will do such through there own sources. No company will ask a potential-employee to do the “credit workup” themselves.
No legit company will send a potential-employee to a third party website -- in this case “creditreport.com” - to “get their free credit report from a site which requires a credit/debit card so the site can charge $14.95, after the seven-day trial period for receiving personal credit information.
RED FLAG #2, for me, and certainly for anyone, is the fact the bogus-company requests your sending of the information gained from your credit report back to their HR Dept. No legit company initiates this practice. They make the point, asking me, to send the reference number to them and not the report, since the reference number is for the report and not your credit score.
I removed the word "careers" from the url; careers-mirageintlgrp.com, and checked mirageintlgrp.com. I do not know if the above site is related or not, but, its easy to see its a generic site.
This is an on-going investigation I am conducting on behalf of all of us. I can tell you for absolute sure none of these are even remotely connected to any hotel and/or casino. The above site (pictured) is pretty generic.
I'll be updating as needed and when necessary.
I checked for anything relating to Careers-Mirage Int'l Group in Portland, Or and there is nothing even close.
So, now, let me go on:
RED FLAG #3 was the URL (Universal Resource Locator - the website address) WhoIs verifying I did using: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp
Here is the information I found regarding "who is" behind this url (careers-mirageintlgrp.com):

-------------------end of WhoIs information------------------
Notice the last line (above) "domains by proxy." What do they do? Using this service folks can avoid having their "WhoIs Information" displayed. (Possibly, another way to hide??) Instead of getting info on the REAL people behind the domain-url (website). Domains By Proxy stand between you and the REAL people running the show.
And, the phone number goes back to an Internet service company, and not
It's perfectly legal (It's hard to believe?).
My point is to show how easy it is for someone to hide while obtaining your personal information.
If you ever question a website as to being legit or not, go to Google and type in WhoIs. Google will present you with a number of site to do a real background check (for free) of who's behind the site operation and who owns the website address.

Dear Mr. Blake,
Please send me your phone number. Unfortunately, due to Internet fraud I can not provide you with anything credit related via email. I will bring them to you in-person, but, to send them over the internet is unacceptable. I'm sure you can understand such.
I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Joseph -----------
I have never heard another word from these people. I have noticed over in Yahoo where people can post questions, there are a lot of comments made about this company, and none are good.
I tried contacting the Oregon Dept of Unemployment who has Craigslist as part of their job searches on computers available to look for work within their offices and was told there was nothing they could do.
Because the Internet is as wide-open as the American west was in the 1800s, there is not much which can be done.
I decided to do something, and that was to write this article in the hopes it will aid others to be on the lookout and always question things when it seems to good to be true, and/or you're asked for information that should NEVER be transmitted to unknown people.
And, here's the worst of all; these “people” are aiming at the hopes of those unemployed.

Good job! Unfortunatley because so many "companies" use Craigslist, Monster, and jobs.com (Do not go to job.com) along with others, I am very leary when it comes to applying for jobs online. In fact, I would like to see major companies like Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes, Target, etc. do away with their online aps all together. How can they expect customer service when they do not offer it for the prospective employee? Technology is inappropriate when the human factor is a primary job requirement.
MJ
Hey MJ,
With all due respect, I'm a believer in change. As, much as it is hard-for-me-to-make-change, there is much truth in the statement; "change and the world changes with you. Don't change and it changes anyway.
The Internet, at least in America, is the greatest thing to arrive since Westward Expansion (c.1850 - c.1915).
And, just like Westward Expansion, the Internet is wide-open, and, I believe "that" to be a good element. During Westward Expansion there was every type of person imaginable out west, and, the Internet is no different.
You, know, I've found two exceptional roommates on Craigslist, and I've bought lots of goodies, sold a guy a 160GB Sata HD about five years ago, and we're still friends, lived in "The Craigslist House" (there I lived with Norman Bates' grandson - OMG, those cat hair shoes....), like it or not, change is occuring, and it always occurs.
A lot of the problems on the Internet are related to what use to be called "common sense." During Westward Expansion the further west you went, the more ruthless folks might tend to be, and one needed common sense. Without it, things just weren't good.
The Internet is no different. Being "savvy" is everything. The Internet uses basic rules used everywhere.
1) If it seems to good to be true, it probably is!
2) Everything on the Internet is a lie till they can prove differently.
3)Would you give up your personal info to a stranger on a street corner? (hopefully not)-
4) A fool and their money are easily parted.
The Internet, like Westward Expansion, has a lot of corners, or someone hiding behind a rock, and lots of promises of $$$.
A friend's mom has paid out (shocking!!) $87,000.00 to a bogus website building company in Bothell, Washington (I'm helping gather the tid-bits on the fakes so they can present it to the Attorney General). Her mom is 80 years old.
Do I feel sorry for her? NO. Mom is a practicing medical doctor. A doctor should have common sense. Especially an 80 year old doctor!
Yes, times are a changin'. Be smart. Be safe. Use common sense. It is, so, simple.
(I sent ya a holiday greeting Wed., and you never responded! over on X)
BW!!
Thank you so much for weighing in. YES, I absolutely believe these folks need to be brought to conclusion. The State of Oregon, well it's just that, "the state Oregon is in."
But, I'm still following up on finding a place to complain in our great state.
Craigslist use to be real easy to pass such info on to, but, it seems "a dead end these days." (How many times do hear that?)
YES, I think complaints need to be filed. From what I could tell they are actually being hosted OR their URL is assigned by proxy through a subsidiary of GoDaddy.com
Go Daddy is based in Arizona, very legit. They've been my hosting company for a number of years. The sub-company is set up for the sole purpose of hiding actual names/addresses on "WhoIs" searches of URLs.
And, in my book, that is unacceptable!
these people are not human, now they got my personal information. i was so blind and desperate i actually believe these people. i'm glad i found your post pinktaxi, i'm just a deperate dad trying to feed his four kids. i feel like a fool
Sam! Thank you for your insight regarding these crooks. You are not a fool and you should not feel like one. These crooks took stealing ID to an extra level with their fake-website and email addresses to their fake-HR department.
If they'd been a little smarter they probably would have duped me too. Their mistake in this elaborate scam was asking for credit information via a third-party, in this case creditreport.com.
Their fake-site is hosted by a legit company, namely Go Daddy. Their use of hiding behind a proxy almost worked. Most folks do not know how to verify a website via the "WhoIs" system.
Most folks have no clue as to how a website is built and maintained, just as most folks no nothing about performing open-heart surgery.
I have been building websites and studying the Internet and its many scams for 14 years. Just as you have skills which you have honed over many years, I, too, have such skills. My honed skills are in the area of the Internet and because of that my skills paid off this time.
DO NOT feel like a fool. We can't all know all the same things. You, I'm sure, are skilled in an area of work I am not.
I, still, have no idea as to what their aim was in stealing the info available on a credit report. I have not been able to get any interest from law enforcement. And, that's why I wrote this article. We don't need the authorities to tell us something is no good. We can tell each other, as, I did in this article.
Again, thanks for your input. Maybe someone will comment if they have been damaged by these crooks. Happy Holidays.

Thank you for this post. I too answered the original ad on Craigslist and found the reply email a bit intrusive with no request to speak with me over the phone or meet in person. The email is what prompted me to research them and your post brought some light into the picture. I plan on informing the Washington WorkSource office of this as well.
