Performance Improvement Plan

A performance improvement plan, often known as a PIP, is a precise set of goals that are given to an employee whose work performance requires improvement. An employee who receives a PIP is usually failing to meet the needs of their job position and the expectations of their boss. Therefore, in many cases, this improvement plan is implemented at the discretion of a supervisor when it becomes necessary to help a person better their skills, work ethic, etc., so they can improve their performance and show their boss that they can get the job done.

The goals that are given in a performance improvement plan vary and depend on the individual and their position within an organization. However, the improvement activities that are outlined for the employee is explicit, so the individual knows exactly where they stand and what is required of them to enhance and achieve the desired performance level. Furthermore, many organizations that provide an employee with a PIP will also offer them support and encouragement to further the chance of the worker's success.

Usually the elements that are outlined on a performance improvement plan include the following:

• A list of the goals and activities the employee will begin to improve their performance. This includes skills that need to be developed or changed to meet job expectations.

• The target date for improvement

• A list of results that are expected

• Progress review dates by the supervisor and employee

A performance improvement plan is often very successful when done correctly. Some employees simply need additional encouragement and more direction before their full potential is revealed.
