One of the best ways to beef up the appearance (and increase the value) of your home is to add a pergola to your backyard patio or deck. You really won't find any less-expensive addition to your home that's both practical (it cuts down sunlight) and pays off with $$ when it comes time to sell.

I've noticed that most new home construction includes a small deck off the back of the house, but it's left completely open to the sun. Before you start building the first pergola plan you see, though, take a moment to think about a pergola designs that might compliment the look and feel of your particular house.

Sure, you'll have a budget to work with, and if you're building the pergola yourself, you'll probably be looking at pergola designs that you think can actually build. So pick and choose wisely, because this type of project can easily get out of hand if you start with something a little more ambitious than you're able to pull off. And that's easy to do, considering how impressive and attractive some pergolas are.
