A fantastic place

Pitlochry is the tourist centre of highland perthshire in Scotland. You have the best of both worlds for fishing in pitlochry. There ia a hydro-electric dam and above it is Loch Faskally and running below it the river tummel. There is a salmon ladder, but the fish dont actually jump up the ladder but they swim through interconnecting pipes. There is an observation window where you can watch th salmon swimming through to get into the loch. However, for us anglers this can get frustrating, cause there are some monsters passing straight in front of your eyes.

You cant fish the area just below the ladder but a little bit further down the fishing is very good indeed. In between the dam and a small bridge over the river there is also some good trout and grayling fishing and you can get reasonably priced permit, depending on what sort of fish you are after from the local tackle shop.

We went there for a long weekend and stayed in one of the quaint bed and breakfasts which at that time were also reasonably priced. So i decided to have a go for grayling with float and maggot fishing. First cast and i got a nice brown trout, which was a good start and the rest of the day was fantastic fishing. The next day i decided to spin for salmon in the loch. No luck there with the king of fish, but there were plenty jumping out of the mirror glass water on this bright sunny day. However i did manage to catch some big perch. I put them back, but until moving to Finland i didnt know what a nice tasting fish a Perch is.

The town itself is fairly new by Perthshire standards, dating mainly from the mid 19th century and it has a higher proportion of hotels and guest houses than most places i know, but you can get more info about the place through the Scottish tourist board web site. So go on have a visit to this anglers paradise, its well worth it.

thor6,

I was not aware that Pitlochry was such a fishing hot spot. When I visited Scotland, I recall going through the town on our way to somewhere else. Thank you for the enlightening information on Pitlochry.
