Not So Boring Places To Stay In Spain
56
Are you tired of the same old boring hotels? Fed up with your annual trip to the Costa's? Why not try staying somewhere a bit more exhilarating. The three places that I am about to talk about will require you to do a bit more than just work on you tan.
Catalonia
Catalonia is a region of Spain that sweeps down from the Pyrenees along Spain's eastern coasts. To the average tourist Catalonia means the Costa Brava, but there is so much more to this beautiful part of Spain. From the snow capped mountains of the Pyrenees, to the orange tree covered vallys of the central plain, to the rugged coast line with its sandy coves, Catalonia has something for everyone.
Admiring the scenery is one thing but why not become part of it? Experience it first hand in the two places I am going to tell you about.
Casa Guilla
Casa Guilla is a converted farmhouse, parts of which are estimated to be 1000 years old. However, it is not the age of this guesthouse that is the talking point, it is its location, a location that will literally take your breath a way. Casa Guilla is perched high up on a rocky crag, this lofty vantage point gives the guests at Casa Guilla unparalleled views of the countryside below. To see a picture of Casa Guilla go to casaguilla.com.
Breakfast and a four-course dinner are included in the price of the room, and believe me when I tell you, you will not go hungry.
There are plenty of activities on offer in the area including; White water rafting and kayaking, winter and summer skiing, rock climbing and hang-gliding, Richard and Sandra Loder who own Casa Guilla can give you details on other activates.
Address - Casa Guilla, Santa Engracia, Apartado 83, 25620 Tremp, Lerida, Spain

Can Cuadros
Can Cuadros is a 1000 year old castle that has been lovingly restored and is now an 8 bedroom hotel. However, to call Can Cuadros a hotel seems a little belittling, this building is so much more. Everywhere you look in this magical place reminds you of its history; even the bedrooms are filled with fascinating artefacts.
As for the food, well that is a memorable as the building. Every meal you eat here will be made with the best local ingredients and virtually everything is organic including the wine.
The owners of the Can Cuadros organise several courses including Medieval Cookery, and Furniture Restoration.
If you were looking for a walking holiday in Spain, the Can Cuadros would make an ideal base.
Address - Can Cuadros, Major3, 25211 Palouet-Massoteres, Lerida, Spain

Hi John, glad you got your first one off the ground!
Having lived in Spain for over 6 years now, I fully appreciate just what a beautiful country it is once you get away from the toursist traps, especially the "Costas". But even here in what probably gets the worst press back in the UK, the Costa del Sol, there are some wonderful places of fthe beaten track. Malaga itself has some truly archaic timeless areas that the developers haven't destroyed (yet) and are well worth scoping out. Maybe I should write my own hub on the area...mmm
Terry
Very Timely HUB.
I am about to go on holiday and will dtaying briefly in Spain.
Unfortunately in Barcelona for two days before going on a cruise.
Any tips for Barcelona (Where to stay what to do)?
Good hub
Hi Lisse,
Thanks for all encouragement over the past few months. Malaga, Clacton with sun lol.
I love Spain and I was going to move there until I lost my business due to MS, but hey life goes on. You never know, I might one day crack this internet business and make enough money to move the family out their.
Take Care
John
Hi Terry,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment on my first hub.
I wish I lived in Spain, we could meet up for a San Miguel or 5.
The funny thing is that when you left your comment about the Costa del Sol, I was in the middle of making a new hub about getting away from the Costas. Great minds and all that.
By the way thanks for all you help over at the honest way.
All the best - John

Wow, big question.
I never really stay in Barcelona and the places I have stayed in are not places I would feel happy to recommend.
As for what to see while you are there, well if your cruising you might as well start at the old harbour. Then take Las Ramblas from the harbour; this 2km boulevard will take you into the heart of Barcelona.
After that it depends if you want to do the whole sight seeing bit.
I would go to Ciutat Vella (the old town), because traffic is not allowed in and it gives you a chance to look around. There is a wide area in the middle of Las Ramblas, where street performer and flower sellers gather, its a lovely place, you can also get guided tours from here, which is the best way to catch the sights.
I hope this has helped.
Have a nice holiday
All The Best- John
As
Nice site...love the out-of-the-way historic places all over Spain.
Oh yes, did I say Spain? Lissy "knows well" that "Catalonia is not a part of Spain." Gee...I guess the Romans had it wrong...so did the Kingdom of Aragon and King Ferdinand.
Tip to travelers: best to avoid the vocal minority with their their mythical past and separatist illusions... :)

Hi John- finally a hub! Catalonia is not a part of Spain I know well - but I am never bored in Spain - though Malaga was pretty weird when we accidently caught a bus thru it - full of English speaking people! I love Madrid and Sevilla
