Ortho Gingivitis - first sign of danger.

When you don't floss with braces live bacteria and plaque change sugar in your diet to ACID, which makes your gums like this picture: Red, Swollen, Infected, and Very Sore.

Pheh, what's the big deal about flossing anyway?

Flossing with braces is essential for avoiding cavities, gingivitis and then even worse - periodontal disease! Signs and symptoms typically seen when your gums are not getting the attention they need are: red, swollen, receding, and uncomfortable sore gums. Ouch! Many people will tell you that this is just "part of having braces" but that is not at all true.

Although treatment plans are customized for each patient, most people wear their braces for one to three years depending on the conditions that need correcting. During this time, it is more important than ever to maintain excellent oral hygiene as there are so many more places for plaque to hide.

Let's just make it simple:

  • We all have bacteria in our mouths - in fact we need it to digest our food!
  • This bacteria can also be harmful when they have lots of goodies (food particles) to eat, and nice safe places to hide (around your brackets, between your teeth, and right under your gums). Ewww...
  • Just picture it. As bacteria are hiding in these comfy safe areas they are creating a colorless sticky film: plaque - a disgusting mix of live bacteria, food goodies, and mucus - that attaches to your teeth!
  • This LIVE bacterial plaque changes sugar in our diet to ACID. This acid eats your tooth's enamel causing cavities and attacks your gums, which is why they are red, irritated, and INFECTED. Ouch.
  • Yep. The most common place for this destruction to your teeth is around your brackets, between your teeth and under your gum line.
  • We're talking Gingivitis, Periodontal Disease, and Cavities...
  • There is only one way to prevent this. You need to scrape that plaque off your teeth. Literally.
  • Brushing cleans the surface of your teeth. Nice.
  • Flossing gets the hide outs. Between your teeth and under your gums: very very nice.
  • You just invested a lot of time and money in that beautiful smile. Don't ruin it before you even get a chance to show it off!
  • Here's the most important part: Flossing with the Platypus is EASY! Use it, floss everyday so when your braces are removed, your teeth don't look like this....

How does it work??

Easy! You can see the anatomy of the flosser below. Just follow these simple steps and you will be flossing your entire mouth with braces quicker than you ever thought possible!

  1. Insert spatula end of the Platypus flosser under your arch wire and press spatula against your teeth.
  2. Keep the spatula pressure against your teeth bringing the floss taut, now slide floss between your teeth and up into your gum line.
  3. Your flossing!! See how the Platypus uses your tooth's anatomy to work correctly? This keeps your wire and brackets safe.
  4. In difficult to reach areas, it is key to maintain pressure against your teeth with the spatula end while flossing.
  5. Use a mirror at first if you need a little visual clarity.
  6. The Bracket Brush is for cleaning food particles out from around your brackets.
