Playing PPS Files on Macs
72Apple has infused support for PPS playback on Macs. This includes support for all the relative objects of the application and its signature slideshow format (PPS). However, the PPS file format manifests a different storage and presentation display capacity on a cross-platform function compared to its original utility under MS Windows operating systems.
PPS files were viewed on Macs using many applications even before Apple integrated Microsoft Office compatibility and support within their platforms. However, inaccurate display and operation was felt using these third-party tools.
Mac OS-Embedded Graphic Viewer
Most Mac users viewed PPS files through a Mac OS-embedded graphic viewer before full support was provided by Apple on more recent Mac OS versions. This application was only capable of displaying the PPS files frame by frame, treating each frame as in individual image object. This method is sufficient for simple PPS viewing. However, this graphical viewer fails to properly display the animated features of PPS files with embedded objects. It only generates still shots of an entirely established slide.
PPS files are presently loaded directly as a slideshow file on Mac platforms since Microsoft has developed a suitable version of their office suite for Mac OS versions. However, variations between the Mac operating system versions and the PowerPoint application editions can lead to reduced PPS presentation performance.
Macintosh PPS Known Bugs
These compatibility errors can result to improper PPS audio and animation delivery despite successful initial PPS loading. This means some PPS files may load without any sound because of OS or PowerPoint version failure to recognize audio data in the WAV format, which is the audio file format frequently used for PPS files.
The absence of PPS animated features for its embedded objects is another error resulting from incompatible Mac OS and PowerPoint versions. Certain embedded animation features may possibly be unavailable when viewed using older versions of PowerPoint in cases where the installed PowerPoint version is older than the PowerPoint version that generated the PPS files.
Apple's own office suite (iWorks) also has an application capable of loading PPS files. This application is called Keynote. However, the full PPS display performance remains unstable because of version compatibility issues. To resolve this problem, a PPS file can be converted into a video format operable under the media player bundled with Mac OS versions called QuickTime.
Despite version sensitivity issues on the proper loading of PPS, this file format is still capable of correctly manifesting itself under Mac OS. It is actively being used cross platform in containing presentation projects. This is possible as long as the user makes sure of involved software compatibility with PPS display operations.
