Dress Styles that suit plus size women? That all depends on your body type. Plus size women, just like their regular size counterparts, all fall into one of 5 body types. Apple (waist thicker than shoulders and hips), Pear (Hips much wider than shoulders), Straight (shoulders, waist and hips all about the same size), Inverted Triangle (wide shoulders, hips narrower than waist) or Hourglass (shoulders and hips about even, small waisted).

Apples will want to detract from their thick waist. Look for body skimming dresses, not tight! Choose a fabric that doesn't cling and has a lot of flow. Slinky is good here. Keep away from styles that draw attention to the waist, like belts, designs, pockets etc around your middle. Show off your slim legs and arms!

Pears will want to draw attention away from their bigger hips. Dresses with flared hems and full skirts look fantastic on you. Make sure to wear small fitting tops with them, this will keep you looking slim. You often have thin arms and small shoulders, so show them off with halter styles.

Straight up and downs are actually already proportioned, just missing curves. Make sure to keep yourself balanced by not emphasizing the top or bottom half. Stick to fitted shapes, as boxy dresses will just hang off you and make you look even less curvy. Low slung belts will give your hips a bit more width, making you look more curvy.

Inverted triangles should have a bit of flare on the skirt of their plus size dress, this will even out the broad shoulders. Wrap around dresses look great on you, as the wrap softens the broad upper body.

Hourglasses should look for waist-defining styles. Anything with a belt looks great on you. Stay away from overly blouse-y tops or dresses that put strong emphasis on only one part of your body, as you are already balanced.

Thanks for this information. Going from petite to plus size makes it hard for me to dress in a way that is suitable for my new frame.
