An Academic Scandal Linked to Politics Ousts University Administrator: Yahoo!
63The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is "U of Ill. chancellor quits amid admissions scandals".
So what exactly was involved? "University of Illinois Chancellor Richard Herman resigned Tuesday following months of pressure after reports that the school admitted more politically connected applicants over more well-qualified ones". OK, if this were Iraq, Iran, North Korea or China, it wouldn't be a surprise for someone to say something like 'I'm a Ph.D., so my wife HAS TO BE AN M.Phil", which is ludicrous, right? People should get into schools and professions that they are qualified for, not because of relations or political affiliations. This is exactly why we have organizations such as Young Democrats and Young Republicans on college and university campuses. Yet, this is exactly what we're dealing with at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne. People who are Democratic or are inclined to vote that way are more likely to get into this school and this has cost the school's top administrator his job.
"According to the university, the 68-year-old Herman will remain with the central Illinois college to teach". After getting fired as university chancellor overseeing admissions? What is he going to do as a professor/instructor? Give students who will vote Democratic in next year's mid-term elections better grades? Surely, if someone has compromised the integrity of the university, as Herman clearly has done, he should be removed from ALL responsibilities at the university.
"The Faculty Senate last month called for Hermann and university President B. Joseph Wilson to step down amid the admissions scandal. Wilson has announced he will leave his post IN DECEMBER". Here's another guy who should be kicked out because some 5-star athletes in various sports will be going on college visits soon so we have to wonder if Wilson (in collusion with Hermann working from the outside now) will bribe these folks as well?
Trustees board chairman Christopher Kennedy tried to play nice: "The more you talk about Richard, the more impressive he is. It will be a challenge to find somebody", but this move has to be made because we cannot have more corruption, bribery, obvious biases and pay-to-play allegations. Otherwise, what are we telling these young students? That it's perfectly alright to play favorites and cheat?
Gov. Pat Quinn's assessment was rather blunt: "I think THE EPISODE certainly did not help the university in any way". The exact opposite is true: this incident has now cast a cloud over this university's reputation.
