Popular Family Dog Breeds
92
What makes a good family dog? Any dog has the potential to be a excellent family dog. Families do prefer some breeds over others because they have good personalities and they are able to bond and interact with family members. Families usually prefer medium to large breeds, only because the small and toy dogs may not be suitable for families with very small children. Small and toy dogs can be aggressive and fragile.
Popular family dog breeds have many traits in common. But, individuals need to remember that each dog has its on unique personality. Pure bred dogs are more predictable when it comes to attitudes because family history can be researched. But, adopting or rescuing a dog from a shelter is always a good choice. The top breeds for families include:
Labrador Retrievers
According to the American Kennel Club, Labrador’s ranks number one on their list of popular dogs in the United States. Labradors are extremely alert and they are very good with children. The best qualities of these dogs are that they are very playful and they make terrific pets. They easily get along with other dogs and any other pets you may own. Labrador’s are curious by nature so a yard with a big fence is ideal. Labrador’s love to be around large families and do not mind social events. These dogs can be kept outdoors, but they prefer to live inside. I think it’s also fair to mention that investing in orthopedic dog beds may be wise particularly when this breed gets older, because they tend to have hip problems later in life.
Golden Retrievers
The Golden Retriever is one of the calmer breeds of dogs. They quickly bond with their owners and they are very loyal. Golden Retrievers are not hostile or territorial. These dogs are extremely patient and they love to be around and involved with activities that revolve around children. The only downside about owning a Golden Retriever is that their grooming routine can be extensive and they shed heavily during spring and autumn. These dogs also can coexist with other pets and dogs with ease. They are ideal companions for people who are elderly.
Beagles
The Beagle is by far one of the friendlier breeds. These fun loving animals are mischievous, but also have a relaxed laid back side. These dogs are clowns, and love to be the center of attention. They are very loving and enjoy snuggling and relaxing with their owners. The Beagle has a distinctive bark which ads to the overall charm of the dog.
Beagles can adjust and coexist with other animals as long as they are raised together. If this is not possible they need time to adjust to any new additions.
Cocker Spaniels
Don’t let the Cocker Spaniel’s small stature fool you. These dogs are strong and resilient dogs. They are fun loving and have the great personality traits of larger dogs. Cocker Spaniels love the outdoors, but prefer to sleep indoors. They look really cute in dog clothes too!
Bulldogs
Bulldogs are excellent family dogs. These dogs are loyal, patient, and are not as active. These dogs are great with children and other pets you may own. The only downside is that Bulldogs are very stubborn so they need training as puppies to be able to behave properly.
