When people think of collecting porcelain dolls, they often assume that the dolls must be antiques or at least vintage. That definitely is not the case as many porcelain dolls are still produced and collected today. If you are just starting out in the hobby of collecting porcelain dolls, it would be wise to get yourself a guide before investing too much money into any particular doll. It should also be noted that if you are just starting out and learning about porcelain dolls, there are sometimes classes offered locally at places like community colleges that will actually teach you the basics of how to make porcelain dolls.

Porcelain Doll Collecting

One of the more popular porcelain doll lines being produced today is sold by Marie Osmond. Her dolls have helped to keep the art of collecting alive and kicking among newer collectors. If for no other reason than they receive quite a bit more exposure than other porcelain collectibles. Many of the dolls produced today come from China. The level of quality found in the dolls can vary depending on the company you are dealing with. Before spending too much money, you should learn a little bit about what consitutes a quality doll. Obvious flaws from manufacture may be easy to pick out, but serious collectors will know the more subtle things to look for in a doll.

Porcelain doll collecting is actually much more than a hobby to some people. Just as with any popular area of interest, there are shows, conventions and all sorts of social and selling events specifically aimed at porcelain doll collecting. Further, as people get deeper into the art of collecting and begin seeing it as something of an investment, they can become pretty darn serious about what they buy, sell and collect.

Collectible Porcelain Dolls

Within porcelain doll collecting, there are many different areas and some people choose to "specialize" or focus on one or two particular types of collectible porcelain dolls. Antique porcelain dolls are probably what most people think of when thoughts of fragile and very expensive dolls come to mind. Because of their age, it is uncommon to find them without some type of wear. Interestly, restoring these dolls can actually take away from their value. If you have a legitimate antique doll, consult with some experts in the area of doll and antique collecting before having any type of restoration done to the doll and certainly don't attempt any kind of restoration on your own unless you are truly qualified and knowlegable in the proper techniques to apply.

Other people prefer to focus on one area such as porcelain baby dolls. These collectors may or may not restrict themselves when it comes to the age of the doll. New porcelain baby dolls can range in price from around ten dollars well into the hundreds of dollars. Of course more collectible dolls can be much more expensive than that.

The list of specialized areas of collecting porcelain dolls goes on and includes miniature porcelain dolls, porcelain fairy dolls, black porcelain dolls, Disney porcelain dolls, Victorian porcelain dolls and many more. Whatever your preference in dolls may be, there is a porcelain doll to match it.

Doll collecting can be a fun and even profitable endeavor. It is an activity that truly lends itself to sharing between generations as dolls are passed from parent to child. If you are just starting a collection, by all means take some time to learn about the dolls before making any major investments.  Check out some new and vintage dolls for sale, but don't ever forget the beauty of the dolls themselves that first got you interested in collecting porcelain dolls.
