When a person become Commanding officer and higher, his photo will be taken and hung at the messes, Guard Room and later on in the museum so that the future generations see it.

And military photographers do not specialise in portraits. So, when he  pose for that photo as Commanding Officer, how should he look? Smiling like a benign man? Or menacing like a terror? Or serious? Or like a super star? Or just like doing your duty, which invariably results in a dumb look? And the photographer is an airman and he will be  his Commanding Officer and the tradition is such that you shouldn't be much worried about how you look in photos. Worrying about how you look in a photo is for women and actors, isn't it? Yet, all Commanding Officers worry a lot because you become Commanding Officer only once in a life time.

Senior officers (Generals, Air Marshals, Admirals) too face such problem. But they are lucky to have staff officers. The staff officer can say that he is not happy with the way the photo has come and the senior officer can act as if he is being bothered by his junior officers to show his face once again for photo

With this background, when you visit military museums, you can see what that man must be thinking while posing for the photograph of his life.
