Things To Consider In Pointe Work
Pointe work in ballet is quite difficult and can injure a dancer for life. There is a need to work towards it with pre pointe exercises. These exercises aim to prepare a ballet dancer towards pointe work. There are at least two important things to make sure before a dancer is ready for pointe work.
First, to consider and work on before pointe work is familiarity with correct techniques. This depends on how much a student dancer has spent in class practicing and the student's personal ability to retain information. Another is that a student must be able to work without constant promptings from the teacher or any authority. This is an indication of a good ballet dancer's attitude.
Second to consider before pointe is muscle strength. The time spent for this vary from one student to another. This also depends on how many classes per week a student has, the student's other activities and general health particularly the development of muscles and bones.

Basic Pointe Exercises
If you notice it is actually time spent in practice of the basic techniques that also helps in muscle development that is needed in pointe work. Here are a few of the basic exercises that needs to be mastered perfectly before pointe work.
1. Plies - these exercises are for warm up. But these exercises also trains the body in shape and placement. The other exercises that follow won't be executed properly without the plies. These exercises also stretch the muscles in the legs to avoid injuries.
2. The releve - This is one of he foundational exercise that is introduced in ballet dancing and must be mastered as on of the pre pointe exercises. This exercise requires you to rise on the balls of your feet the position for pointe. This exercise will strengthen significantly muscles involved en pointe, the legs, the feet and the ankles.
3. Battement Tendu - There are several of this exercise and the main purposes for these exercises are to warm up the legs, to build leg muscles and improve turnout. These exercises is characterized by the working leg's opening and closing.
4. Rond de Jambe - this exercise is for flexibility of the hips and maximizing turnout. This is done with the semi-circular motion with the working foot on the floor or air.
The exercises mentioned above may just be the basic movements and posture but they should be mastered and be executed with ease, comfort and grace in pre pointe exercise. The measure at which a student performs these exercises will determine readiness to pointe work. If these exercises become part of the student and with fully developed muscle it might be time for pointe work.
