The Theory of the 'Mob Effect'

I would like to discuss a phenomenon that has been around since mortal intelligence, and how you can effectively use it to promote your music. This phenomenon is known as the 'Mob Effect.' I am not speaking about the 'criminals' or a 'gang,' but I'm speaking of a process so powerful that it has allowed many everyday people to become powerful leaders.

To understand the mob effect and how it works, think about this situation:

Let's say that you are driving down the street and come to a stop light. The driver in front of you all of a sudden gets out of their car and starts looking up with an astonished and confused look on his face.

After he stands their shaking his head for a moment, you get curious and you try to look up at what he's looking at from your window while sitting in your car. After a few seconds of realizing that you can't see anything from inside the car, you get out of the car and look up to try and see what has him so interested in the sky.

The crazy thing is, you still don't see anything, so you look at him, and see that his head is shaking even more and his face looks even more astonished. So you quickly look back up again, really trying to see what this guy is looking at.

You still don't see anything! So you start looking confused and shaking your head while thinking, "what is this guy seeing?!"

After a few more minutes of looking at the blank sky, you look back down, and realize that the red light has now turned green. So you prepare to jump back in your car to pass the light, until you realize that you're not going anywhere.

You look around and there are now 20 cars at the intersection, but everyone is standing outside of their car looking up at the sky. Everyone saw the first guy and you standing outside looking up at the sky with a confused look on your faces, so they went through the same process as you and got out of their cars to look.

As the next person did it, got confused, and kept looking, the cycle just continued on until before everyone got back in their car, the light turned red again.

This my friends, is the Mob Effect, and you can use it for music marketing that gets dramatic results!

How The Mob Effect Works for Your Music

You could be wondering what the story above has to do with the subject of how to promote your music. You see, there are some key things that the story and this effect demonstrate, that can really help you effectively promote your music.

The first thing that happened that led to a string of other events, was the person in the car in front of you got so convinced in his own mind about there being something there, that he actually got out of his car and really acted convinced!

If he didn't act as convinced as he did, you never would have wondered what was going on and got out of your car to investigate.

This same principle applies when you promote your music. You have to be convinced that your music is truly worth something, and you have to portray that conviction wherever you go. If you do not look or act like you are truly convinced that your music is worth listening to, then no one else will.

The same thing applies for music producers as well. If you are an urban producer who creates and markets rap beats and r&b instrumentals, and you don't yet have a big name, then you have to sell yourself as a hot producer with beats that can help take an artist to the next level, and increase their mob effect!

This concept also applies to most types of business. If you don't believe in what you are or what you are trying to present, or can't at least pretend that you are, then you will not be able to benefit from the phenomenon of the mob effect.

Now that you have the belief in your music, you have to DO SOMETHING that shows people that you are really convinced.

Remember, in the story the guy was so convinced that he got out of his car and showed his conviction. You have to find what it is that you can do that will actually show people and make them say, 'this music artist is really convinced because they actually ____________, so maybe I should really check their music out!"

Conviction without action behind it, is not true conviction...

Picking Your 'Mob Team'

One of the key components to making your 'music mob campaign' successful is picking the right people to be a part of your 'mob.' The reason this is important is because when you sell your belief about your music to the right people, then it won't be long before the 'multiplication factor' kicks in and the word gets spread about your music like a rumor in gradeschool.

In order to make your music mob campaign successful even faster, you will need 'impressionable music fans.'

These are people who are not only really into music, but they become strong advocates and 'sales-people' for artists who they truly love. If you can find these people, and get them to check out your music and they like it, then they will become your army of salespeople who will go out and bring more fans to you.

If you do this right and stay persistent, there will come a point where you have an opportunity to gain more fans in 6 months than you have in the last 2 years combined.

It's not hard to find these types of people. They are all over the web, and they have their favorite major artists all over their profile pages in the social networks, they dress like them, and some of them even try and talk like them.

Keep in mind that these major artists were not always major.

They had a point, just like you can have, where the mob effect kicked in when they started putting their music in front of the impressionable people.

Always remember, it's not the artist who makes themself a major contender, its always the fans. If you always remember this, then you will do well. The fan's word of mouth is more powerful and more longer lasting than any marketing budget, and costs a lot less too.

This is why some major record companies hire and pay people to pretend that they are huge fans of certain albums, so that the mob effect will occur and they will sell more albums!

Yes, I am spilling the beans on the majors! They (major labels) actually hire 'fans' to make sure that this mob effect occurs when they are trying to promote a new album or a not-so-hot new artist!

It's not all of them, but it happens enough. But now that the independent music revolution is occuring, it will happen less and less, as true music fans emerge and create the mob effect without help from the 'hired fans.'

So if you can just find those people who become strong advocates and die-hard fans for their favorite artists, and get them to become your fan, then they will take care of the rest. All you will have to do once it kicks in is keep making hot music.
