What are Proxy Servers?
68
Proxy servers are sometimes used to mask what somebody is doing on the Internet. When you connect to a web site, your IP address is given to that web site for use in statistics and other metrics. Any time you set-up an account at a web site, forum or service, your IP address is recorded and kept on file for any number of reasons. In most cases, it will never matter that your Internet identity is kept on record, but if you are worried about it, you can utilize proxy servers to hide your online identity from such sites and services.
A proxy server basically filters an original connection, from your own Internet connection, through another server connection masking your actual IP address. While more advanced network administrators can see right through a proxy connection, for the most part, a proxy server will more than mask your identity for the majority of browsing you would do on the Internet.
There are two major proxy servers: One that redirects your connection via a connection and one you run yourself from your computer. Most users utilize the former to keep their identity safe. However, some folks choose to run a proxy server from their own system. In most cases, you will never have a need to do that.
If you choose to utilize a connection redirect over the Internet, you can do that in several different ways. You can either configure your browser's IP address manually to a redirect IP address and routing pathway, or you can utilize a plug-in to do it for you. For example, if you use Firefox as a browser, you can install extensions that will apply a proxy server for you during your browsing sessions.
Proxy servers an alternative to protecting your IP address from unwanted eyes. It is not fool proof, but for the majority of users, it will serve its purpose. Research your options if you are truly worried about your IP address being exposed and act appropriately to protect yourself.
