Have you thought in a Public Relations Job?

Are you young and active? Do you like to know knew people? Are you looking for a job? Have you ever thought on a Public Relations job? This is a great opportunity!

To be a good public relations professional here are some things you do not want to:

  1. confuse the basic function of public relations jobs with sub-parts that want to make up the whole like publicity, crisis management or employee communications;
  2. be unsure in approaching public relations problems, be uncertain about what counsel to give your client;
  3. rely on career-long misconceptions about pr jobs and start advising the employer/client ineffectively;
  4. realize too late that you have gone through your entire career without a firm grasp of what pr jobs are all about.

So, first thing to do, start studying what it is needed to be a good public relations, so that you can understand the discipline and its core strength. A good beginning is to take a career advice: they can help you to realise what type of person you are, and if a public relations job is the best option for you.

Understanding what being public relations is

To be a professional in a pr job you should start learning about people’s behaviours: people act on their perception of the facts; those perceptions lead to certain behaviours; and there is always something that can be done about those perceptions and behaviours that lead to achieving an organization's objectives.

A public relations professional accomplishes its mission when he successfully creates changes or reinforces public opinion by reaching, persuading and moving-to-action those people whose behaviours affect the organization.

This means that public relations professionals must modify somebody's behaviour if they are to help hit the employer's objective and earn a pay check. All else are but means to that end.

Move to action: Start a Public Relations Job

Once you have understood firmly what is a public relations job, move to action by following this problem-solving sequence:

  • identify the problem or challenge
  • set the public relations goal
  • set the public relations strategy
  • identify target audiences
  • prepare persuasive messages
  • select/implement key communications tactics
  • monitor progress
  • the game end when you meet the behaviour modification goal.

Following this work strategy you’ll measure you performance very accurately: when you clearly achieve the goal you set at the beginning of that activity, it's pure success.

Make no mistakes

If you follow this problem-solving sequence, can you expect to avoid the four pitfalls listed above because:

- With previous preparation you wont confuse action tactics with the basic mission of a public relations job, because you will know precisely what you’re looking for and what fits where in the public relations problem-solving sequence.

- You’ll feel more confident about providing counsel to the client because the public relations problem that you are facing is clearly identified. This allows you to select solutions that obviously fit into the action sequence outlined above. You have identified your target audiences because you know exactly who your client wants to reach, and the necessary action tactics needed will then be evident.

- You realize that you have gone through your entire career WITH a firm and successful grasp of what a public relations job is all about.

The result

By following the action sequence outlined above, you’ll be publicising your client’s organization, by burnishing the reputation of the organization, its service and products. You will do your best to approach those target audiences to your client’s organization interest, and persuade them to do what your client wants them to do, by applying all your tactics to move those individuals to action.

And your client will be fully satisfied with your public relations results when you have produced visible modification in the behaviours of the target audiences you’re your client wishes to influence.

This is the central function of a public relations job the basic context in which you must operate in your pursuit of a successful and satisfying public relations career.
