How To Hit A Punching Bag

PUNCH BAGS AT THEIR FINEST.

The boxing bag punch bags are superior tools. Back in the days of old, it was an important tool for military training.

This Hub page is dedicated on how to hit the heavy bag. This all important tool has been around for 1000's and 1000's of years. And well... it's been around for a reason right?

As a doctor by profession, many a time, I see so many patients coming to me with broken or fractured or sprained wrists. Unnecessary and problematic in today's world because of our dependency on the computer and the need to use it in our daily living.

From what? All from hitting the heavy bag during fighter training or just at the gym recreationally. Hence, I've devoted this page to the proper education of how to hit a punching bag.

First and foremost, it should be known that punch bags come in different stiffness types. What I mean by this is that some punch bags are filled with sand, others air, etc. Some even water! As you can imagine, the strength of the boxing bag varies by how it is filled - which includes:

1. How Tightly It Is Filled

2. What Material It Is Filled By

3. The mixture of the filling.

If you fill your punch bags with gravel for instance, it will probably break your hand.. or if you can handle it, you'll have the strongest hands on the planet... even stronger then Anderson Silva. Get what i'm saying now? Good.

So if you want to hit a punching bag, the first and most important thing is to guage the strength of the bag. If it's too hard, you might need to put on some boxing gloves! Or just get a new bag... On the other hand, maybe you filled it incorrectly. If for instance, you put a bunch of sand at the top instead of the bottom, the bag won't hold it's shape. Heavier materials on the bottom!

So this is the first and most important thing when it comes to the boxing bag - the strength of the bag.

Now, the correct way to hit a punching bag is quite simple. These heavy bags are designed to be hit, but their shape also dictates to use that you can't just go crazy on it. The rounded nature of the bag could cause you to slip your punch when you hit it. This would probably cause a shoulder or upper body injury so be careful.

Let me make it clear however that how you hit the punch bags is dependent on what type of fight you're training for. If you're training for a UFC fight, you'll want to get a grapple bag maybe or strike in hard fast shots. If it's boxing, take a more controlled, cool approach.

So now matter what fight you're training for the number one key to remember is that you CAN NOT lock your elbows when you hit a punching bag. If you're punching right, put your left foot forward so you can move in with your right foot. Put your body into it!

Make sure you stretch your hands and wrists as well. This is the proper way to hit the punching bag.

In another hub, I shall discuss exactly how to hit a punching bag based on what type of fight you are training for or what you wish to achieve.

Is it endurance or strength? Are you training for MMA or boxing?

This shall all be discussed in the next hub I publish.

Until next time!
