Reading Aids

I have a number of simple pleasures I enjoy in life. I love taking a walk. I love being alone and listening to music. I love looking at trees. I love the sound of birds chirping as dusk moves into dawn. I love hanging out with my wife and my son. I love reading. Yes, reading! However, as we aging baby boomers know-and doubtlessly are experiencing-our eyesight is not what it used to be. We cannot see the print in the books that we are reading as well as we could when we were in our younger years. Question: What can we do about it? How can we maintain the simple pleasure of reading for the rest of our lives? We can do one of three things or do all three at varying times: We can use a magnifying glass, a pair reading glasses, or we can use Amazon's Kindle.

We can use a magnifying glass to help us to continue enjoying our pastime of reading in our spare time. I recall seeing a number of older adults using magnifying glasses to see the print in the books that they were reading. The book would be resting on the desk and they would have the magnifying glass in the one hand. The magnifying glass would not rest in one place. Rather it would be constantly moving as if the users of the magnifying glasses were detectives searching for clues to a crime. They would have total focus, absorption, intensity, and oblivious to the rest of their environment. They were, you might say, in a complete state of concentration.

Another thing we baby boomers can do to aid us in keeping the joy of reading in our lives for the rest of our lives is to use reading glasses. In my youth, I put in a lot of time-perhaps too much time- working at bookstores until I came to realize that I was engaged in an irrational activity of working as hard as I could in order to make as little money as possible-that's another story. Anyway, I would find myself selling a number of reading glasses from day to day. All were purchased by older adults, of course, to help them get through the various novels, bestsellers, self-help, history, business and other books that they were reading. This, as opposed to a magnifying glass, was their reading aid of choice, to enable them to read the material that they wanted to absorb.

Today there is a new reading aid that can assist aging baby boomers that is little known or talked about. It's Amazon's Kindle! Many years ago, I was musing to myself that wouldn't it be nice if books could change font size in the same way that it is done in a Word document? This would undoubtedly be a great help to older adults-say, aging baby boomers-to see better what they are reading. Well, that is no longer a dream. Amazon's Kindle allows you to do just that! It allows you to determine the size of the font that you want to use for your reading. All you have to do is press the font key on your Kindle to adjust the font to a size that you deem perfect for your reading pleasure. No longer are limited by two choices: either magnifying glasses or reading glasses. Today's there's a third choice: Amazon's Kindle!

In conclusion, you can continue to enjoy reading for the rest of your life albeit with a little help from your reading aid of choice: a magnifying glass, a pair of reading glasses, or with the aid of the new kid on the block-Amazon's Kindle!

I heard Microsoft's planning to introduce a software that will allow newspapers to be published in laptops! I guess that's where we're headed to huh?

Hi Lgali, I'm glad to see that you are getting to be one of number one fans! Thanks for your comment. Truth to be told, I originally was going to write an article about investment, but this came to me, so I wrote about it. Thanks again, Lgali. I appreciate your comment. It's good to hear from you again.

Really, Cris? That's great! I think that it is about time that we put a lid on how many trees can be cut down to service the newspaper industry. Thanks for your comment.

Yes, really! I think its for some big newspaper publisher in the US so that the modern man can read the news in the subway without hitting somebody's head! LOL And they'd still maintain the newspaper format - paginations, layout etc.

Hey, by the way Cris, I left you a comment on your last hub. And yes, I think that being able to download newspapers to our lap and desktop is the way to go and is the wave of the future.

Some great news right? amidst all the things that have been happening around... and have you heard of the discs made of paper? I don't know what to think about that honestly

Love these two quotes from your profile:"Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for life." "Unless you be born again, you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven"

I have a library of books I would love to get into again.  Many I couldn’t read 25 years ago without a magnifying glass.  It is difficult for me to sit down and read my giant print Bible now with reading glasses because I get a cramp in my neck, from reading too long.

Now, I do most of my Bible related reading on the computer now, where I can adjust the fonts.  Anyway the Kindle sounds great.  I’ll have to put that in my letter to Santa.

Thank you for the information. ~ eddie
