Whether or not you realize it, as a licensed real estate agent, YOU are an entrepreneur. An excellent resource for entrepreneurs is Inc. Magazine. My latest copy just arrived in my mailbox. The cover article is an interview of Jim Collins – author of Good To Great and Built To Last. What’s fascinating is that he is passionate about entrepreneurs and views those two books as being about entrepreneurship – even though the subject matter is huge, publicly traded companies.

Jim offered an interesting perspective about the evolution in thinking around entrepreneurs.

 - Entrepreneurship can be taught – and learned:

Not only are there hundreds of courses in business schools, there is also an abundance of books, magazines and other resources available to assist in teaching entrepreneurship.

 - There has been a cultural shift in attitude towards entrepreneurs:

The attitude in 1979 was that entrepreneurship was for mavericks. Entrepreneurs were crazy, creative people that weren’t quite normal. Today, not only are entrepreneurs socially acceptable, they are practically viewed as heroic!

 - Entrepreneurship is no longer seen about building a better mousetrap:

 - Rather than limit the scope of a company to just one “mousetrap”, now it is understood that the real “product” of a business is its systems and its processes. If a company has an excellent process, it can be applied to many “mousetraps”.

 - Web 2.0 has created the phenomena of companies becoming movements:

Jim Collins lists 3 stages of a company: Stage One is to have a great idea. Stage Two is to build a business that can implement the great idea. Stage 3 is to build a great company. A great company will have many successful businesses. However, some companies become a movement – something bigger than the company itself.
- Have a great idea.

Having a movement is much more than building a successful business around a great idea. A movement is when your customers become your sales force!

How can YOUR business become a movement?

 1. Thinking from your customer’s point of view, what can you give them that they most need? If you want your business to go viral, it must be much bigger than you. You have to set it up in such a way that others can “buy into” your idea.

 2.  Identify your niche market – who benefits most from your service?

3. Talk to your ideal prospect in THEIR language by creating an “organic” (from the bottom up) USP.

4. Provide your ideal prospect with the valuable information they are looking for by utilizing social media.

5. Social media allows you to build a community. Once they are part of your community, create opportunities for them to communicate with you directly.

6. Once they communicate with you directly, make them an “Insider” and continue strengthening your relationship with them. Then let them go to work spreading the word about your great service!
